I know you're all going to call me a traitor for this, but I support Gensokyoan independence, and not for the reasons you might be thinking. It isn't because the war is too costly, either in human lives or material goods, even though it is. It isn't because managing two dimensions and over twenty billion people would be a logistical nightmare that our government doesn't seem capable of handling, even though that looks to be the case. And it isn't because fully completing the industrialization of Gensokyo to bring it up from subsistence farming to a sustainable economy would be a multi-quintillion dollar enterprise of which we aren’t capable, even though it would.

No, I support Gensokyoan independence because they deserve it. They're the ones who left the safety of their home dimension, cast their lot among the youkai, and engaged in the greatest migration of human life of this or any other century. They're the ones who built the wooden huts and raised the watchtowers. They dug the mines, freed the ore, and prompted an industrial golden age the likes of which our species has never seen. They are simply the most recent examples of an ancient ideal, like the founders of pre-Unification America, or the pre-Unification Australians. Brave and noble pioneers who abandoned everything, who risked their very lives for something better. And they, like their adventurous forebears, deserve to own the land on which they live.
