They could cave your face right in, no problem.

However like most youkai, they have a crippling weakness.

Throw some beans at an Oni, and even an Anon can beat one.

They left because humans are liars and cheaters.

For all their great mystical powers and love of competition, oni are not beyond acting like scrubs occasionally. There are ways around the whole weakness with the beans, but it seems they just couldn't bother with one.
It seems the whole cultural code of fair play oni have really overrides everything.

>> No.8021487

Well, the deal is that Onis are honest. Brutally honest. This translates into situations where an Oni takes a liking to a human, they get kidnapped and taken to god knows where, which made humans unhappy, and since humanity could not fight Onis fairly, they resorted to underhanded tactics to even the scales.

Onis thus abandoned humans.

Somewhat similarly, tengu too are known for being honest (although Aya isn't quite a prime example of that), but not to the point of being helpless against being cheated. Tengu rather believe revenge is a fair part of the game, as long as it is proportional to the cheat.

Tengu do find themselves out-competed by humans as well, though. There's the story of this mind-reading tengu (the trick is not unique to satori) shouting out loud what some man was thinking, just to piss him off. After a while, the man has enough of the tengu's tomfoolery and punches the poor bird demon in the face, leading the latter to exclaim that humans are dangerous because they can do things without thinking about it and fly off. And there are a few accounts of would-be prankster tengu getting beaten by goho doji of prominent monks. They still integrate better than most youkai, temples frequently list a few crow tengu amongst their worshipers. Those assist in times of war and are said to be extremely competent in swordplay (but take this with a grain of salt, the six tengu warrior-monks mentioned in Heike Monogatari still got their beaks handed out to them.)

About that last part, do you know if Sojobo is still alive?

>> No.8021585

>>8021576
Sure, why not. Daitengu seem to live as long as their mountains do.

You know, Lord Tenma/Princess Iwanaga now seems like a feasible pairing. I wonder if there's any art of the two.

Not sure. Haven't quite been able to get a confirmation on whether Sojobo himself is considered to be alive, as part of a timeless folklore that takes place "right now", or if he's considered a "historical" folklore character who was alive but very old in the 13th century, but hasn't been seen since.

1198: Sojobo was pretty damn old the last time anyone saw him, so presumably he was dead. But he did show up, and he did kick ass.
1253: Sojobo was pretty damn old the last time he showed up, so presumably he would be dead by now. But he did show up, and again, he did kick ass.
1863: Sojobo was *really* old the last time anyone saw him half a millennium ago, so presumably he would be dead by this point. But again he showed up, although he kicked no asses this time.
1945: Sojobo was really old the last time he was seen 80 years prior, so presumably he would be dead by now.
And indeed, he failed to show up.
20XX: Sojobo failed to show up the last time, so presumably and with much certainty, he would be dead by now. But again, he did show up.
And Sojobo wept bitterly, for there were no asses left to be kicked.

Onis used to kill humans for fun, humans started killing them back, Onis didn't like this so they left underground.

They're weak to beans, Patchouli does a bean throwing festival every year to drive away the oni. The Tengu and Kappa were once servants of the oni in the mountain and are still somewhat afraid of them coming back.

That's about it.

It's not lewd, it's a necessity. Good ventilation is an underrated must of every worthwhile combat uniform.

Which sadly seems to be the only good part the tengu got right. But anyway, credit where credit is due.
