I'm painfully forcing myself to play Dragon Quest 7. The higher level I get the harder it is to skill up classes, so I tried to stay low and suffered the consequences. Also enemies barely drop any gold so I can't even buy good equipment.

And then a party member leaves. FFFFFFF
On the plus side, FINALLY got to the class change temple.

DQVII was the weakest and the most painful to play, played it years ago, never replayed, a good thing.

I was getting really bored until I got to class temple, and by then, enemies aren't much of a challenge, it's like a different game. At least it had cameos from previous DQs.

I only noticed the sister from DQ4.
If they were going to do cameos they should have tried to make the sprites to actually look like the original characters.

Oh! Also, the first FMV wasn't so bad. Then you have the dancing FMV and it's so laughably BAD. It hurts to look at the attempt to directly translate an anime design into 3D objects.

Waiting for Tales of the Abyss 3DS, it'll be the first time I get to play that game because Namco Bandai hates Europe.

Currently just replaying my old games, Persona 4, might pop P3 back in one of these days, it's been a while.

Playing Rogue Galaxy again after many years. Tried to do the grinding "quest" but I gave up halfway, now all my characters and weapons are high leveled and everything is way too easy.
Well, I still enjoy the game.

Guess I'll buy Xenoblade someday.

Small comfort... At least I'll always have DQ9. It's too easy and short (since I'm not counting the post-game stuff), but damn, it looks wonderful AND it provides me with cameos from all those wonderful DQ characters. It's what made me want to finish 7 and 8.

Once I finish 7 the only other void in the main saga would be DQ8. Never owned a PS. I think I could buy an old PS2...

"JRPG" is a flawed faux term coined by rewievers holding a bias against games like Final Fantasy or whatnot, in preference for the "W" games made in the magical land of "the west", which basically comes down to "America".

"W" or "J" does in fact, not say anything about the actual genre. And unlike thematic genres like, Fantasy, Action, Drama etc, or mechanical genres like RTS, FPS, as well as, RPG, the notion of W or J says little to nothing.

Also, the notion that JRPGs would have anything to do with turned based combat, narrative storytelling or a cinematic approach, or anything of the sort, wheras WRPGs would be something else, is also highly ironic in itself.

In fact, the "RPG" in digital RPG games, doesn't actually even refer to roleplaying. The irony of the matter is that the only reason they were even called RPGs in the past, was, because they were directly derived from and adapted from, actual Roleplaying Games such as D&D or whatnot, that is, TRPGs.
The notion of actual roleplaying in a digital game is practically impossible, so no one ever deluded themselves to think otherwise. It was however, honest attempts to replicate the games as much as possible, hence "RPG", but there were never any "roleplaying" so no one ever implied that.

And these games, derived and adapted from this, would for an example among others, be Wizardry for the undoubtly largest and most prominent prime example, or say, Onyx for a game with success in Europe/Asia, all made, by, American developers and they are still to this day some of the most successful computer RPGs made in the west, hence, technically, "WRPGs".

Wizardry however, shares many of the typical, yet ill defined traits of what is often argued to be a "JRPG", including random encounters, turn based combat, you name it. Still though, these things are directly derived from D&D, one of the epitome of things considered western and or RPG.

It also makes little sense when Japan have made dozens of Roguelikes or whatnot, another oftene nough considered "western" aka American "RPG Genre". But it even gets weirder when they do free roaming or sandbox games like I don't know, King's Field or whatever.

Games like that of Bioware or Bethseda were never called "WRPGs" in the past, and this term is still to this day incredibly ill defined.
They used to be called "Computer RPGs", Computer Games, derived from, you guessed it, RPGs, or as they might need to be called today, TRPGs, table roleplaying games.
"Console RPGs" however, were often enough simplified as to work with a gaming console, both in terms of spec, but also hardware such as commonly lacking a keyboard and a command prompt. Hence simplified game design. In Japan these were commonly simply called "Light RPGs" due to fairly obvious reasons. And if you take a game, like say, Wizardry, and simplify it in this manner, you basically get a game with not much other than narrative with some basic RPG derived mechanics. Games, often enough aimed at a casual audience that didn't feel like learning 200+ skills/abillities to by heart write them in a command prompt.

All of these games, always had terms, real terms with actual definitions that gave away something definate about what the work in question actually entailed, much so like Fantas/Action/FPS.

But reviewers with a bias have simply wanted to make a "we" vs "them" case of the matter, and in the process they blurted out buzz words such as "W/J-RPG", which is still to this day ill-defined faux terms. And in the end, the cause of this, is almost always rooted in some form of bias/racism, or even Xenophobia. The belief that one half of the industry were to be inferior/superior over the other even if it makes the same games.

Will I regret buying Disgaea 4 when they remake it for the Vita?
If the Vita version were to have map-making intact, I would regret such a purchase so hard...
