So how many fellow lovers of jp actually know the language?

For those of you who do, how did you learn it, are you native speaking or what?

Personally I am curious on what route I should take to learn the language. Are taking college courses worth it or the way to go? I'm just wondering if I should fork out the money for them or not...

I'm not THAT determined to learn Japanese, I just pick it up slowly watching anime. My vacation to Russia made me realize that nothing works better than going to the country yourself. I learned the Russian alphabet in less than 3 weeks, where it would take me months if I studied at home.

So I guess I'll really learn Japanese when I'm going there, because I'm too lazy to learn a language at home.

Anime/movies/voiced games are actually quite good for listening practice. No, really. Don't go around imitating the imouto-tan's bizarre speech patterns in public or people will think you're retarded, but just hearing how lots of different types of people speak (men and women, different ages, different social classes, and how an old-fashioned character talks different from a modern one) can be really benificial.

Keeping a vocabulary journal while you watch or read stuff can be really useful. Jot down words you don't know, then look them up later and write down their meanings and the kanji.

Also, Japanese class is important IMO. Find one with a good teacher and several other students so you'll have an opportunity to do dialogue practice.

If you're trying to cram the hiragana/kanji in your head, then playing karuta with them and a friend is a really good method.

After about eight years of this (two self-taught, three studying in university/Japanese school, and three years living in Japan) I'm at a fluent level as far as everyday conversation.

Unless you're in some kind of special intensive class, this really isn't a good idea. You're extremely limited to grammar/vocab you learn in class, not to mention the terribly slow pace most university Japanese courses move at. It's a big waste of money imo.

Try to meet Japanese people online and practice with them instead if you can't actually be in Japan.

Download books. No money after all.
But in few weeks I understood that this whole language is fucking monotone shit and the country itself is idiotic traditional dirt. Yeah, traditions. Fuck that. Who want to live and learn about the place where are still that many idiots?
Thanks for the eroge and music though.

Russian is quite easy for western people. Believe me lol. You shouldn't get any trouble in learning it. But why? Russian is pretty much useless.
