It strikes me that the turtle formation would also be perfect for hikki transport. If you padded your shield with lots of pillows it would be like a comfy moving bed.

Their spears would mostly serve to skewer wildlife, which is then cooked and eaten, though a few long metal poles would be pointed upright to capture thunderbolts and use them to power the colony's laptops. It'll make a completely self-sufficient, impregnable shut-in assembly, with engravings on the inner sides of each shield depicting cute 2D girls that appeal to the fetishes of the shield's owner.
