I found it frustrating how the other characters reprimand Shirou for his bad decisions, yet the seemingly good decisions always lead to him getting killed.

I think they did it on purpose to put bad ends behind some "good" decisions so you'd feel continuing the story was a bit more challenging than just choose really inane shit.
Of course it's all for nothing as soon as you use a walkthrough, but still it provided a nice sense of lingering danger.
