Takashi Takeuchi and Kinoko Nasu are both much better suited to the "conceptual" side of visual novels. Their designs and general settings/storylines are good overall, but neither of the two properly manage to make it come out the way it should.

It's pretty much required for some cards. For instance, you have to be at the very bottom of the screen for some of Reisen's cards that shoot a bunch of bullets that move across most of the screen near instantly and then slow down at the end. If you're further up, you're instantly fucked. Also, some, like Mokou's phoenix spell card, are nearly impossible unless you go into practice and memorize a route that spreads out the bullets. Some are certainly pure skill, but some are also memorization. Some people like one, some the other, and Touhou delivers both.

Type Moon is popular for a good reason, a lot of my favorite female fictional characters come from Tsukihime and one comes from F/SN, and Tsukihime is still my favorite visual novel. Nasu knows how to write awesome female characters and make scenes emotional, and that requires good delivery as well as good concepts.
