Terribly under-rated touhou. Her Aya interview is often ignored; where it's pretty much explicitly stated that Keine, not Reimu, is the real guardian of the village these days.

It matters not what you may think would happen given another case, if Keine is paranoid enough to confuse the shrine maiden with youkai then I find it even more likely for her to confuse a kid about the same age as Reimu as a youkai as well, IIRC there are youkai/spirits/whatever who take on the appearance of humans to lure or troll people in the mythology.

I'm going to add something to the whole paranoid vs. "too" paranoid argument. Perhaps Keine is a bit over paranoid, but that could be due to her being afraid. Maybe she's afraid of herself. Her lack of strength as a human, her lack of ability to control herself as a youkai, or maybe it's her fear of trust. It could be a lot of things. I do agree she has a deep personality, one that is much deeper than some other characters but I think she is a real character where others may be more perfect.

How does Keine's transformation work? When the full moon comes out, does she just suddenly poof into her youkai form? Is it a gradual change as the moon rises into the sky, with hair sprouting from her skin and horns extending from her skull? Thinking of it similar to Arthur Dent cheating death at "Stavromula Beta". While Keine still is mortal even with her exceptionally long lifespan, the last time the hakutaku appeared to a virtuous ruler seems to have been long before her birth, and it doesn't seem like there's going to be another one for a while still. So presumably Keine has yet to appear to the emperor, as the hakutaku should.
