Chill it. Many kinds of drinks, after having been in the freezer for a little while, are usually much, much smoother going doing ice-cold than room-temp.

Also just drink it as fast as possible and chase it with a little gulp of water afterwards; with that you can drink practically anything. If you hold in a shot of something in your mouth for more than a couple of seconds the discomfort will grow 10x worse; however if the drink tastes good (like a good scotch) you probably wouldn't mind savoring it like this (you absolutely should savor scotch actually, sip at it rather)... But, if you don't forcibly insta-gulp down something like bottom-shelf vodka, you'll possibly want to vomit then and there, and/or uncontrollably spit it out of your mouth because your body refuses to swallow it once that ultra-bitter taste sets in. Although actually, if you're drinking gin basically nothing will work, because gin tastes much more like window cleaner than basically any other drink, and that's that.

Your liquor should really be chilled via fridge/freezer though; putting in ice cubes will water it down and make it suck (unless it was a mixed drink to begin with).

I used to drink myself shit faced pretty much every other day. I loved the feeling of being kind of blissfully retarded, and finding pretty much everything a hell of a lot more enjoyable, even if I didn't remember much of it the next day. The problem was, that it didn't stay like that for too long, and eventually it got to the point where when I'd drink I'd just get really drowsy almost immediately, and have almost none of the fun part. That just seemed like a huge waste of money, so I stopped drinking entirely, and haven't done so for several months now. If I could get drunk like I could when I first started, would I still do so? Definitely.

I find that doing some light drinking goes extremely nicely with lots of things tough (besides anything that needs twitch reflexes like Touhou or Counter Strike). This is as in just plain stopping well before what your known limits are, but doing just enough to land you in heavy tipsy/light drunk phase (usually that's 4-6 quick succession shots for me). While tipsy, VNs are more engrossing, anime is (sometimes greatly) more amusing etc. It's also a funny case study in how alcohol affects your decision making process, sometimes I make really rash/unusual (for me) choices in VNs, or suddenly the whole cast of an anime suddenly seems immensely fappable etc.

I guess part of it stems from your mind slowing down a bit while being tipsy; you're cognizant enough to still think and focus on things, but for some magical reason everything just seems to be more fun.

Ultimate secret relaxing god tier for me, is warm sake + Hidamari Sketch. I don't do it often since I don't want to cheapen my little ritual, but without a doubt that's the most relaxing combo I've discovered in life.
