The original game is about 100 hours and the expansion is probably 50-100 hours depending on how much you do optional quests, but for completionists there's lots to collect and there's even a super duper bonus dungeon after the expansion storyline that's reportedly six hours long.

Well, as a matter of fact, Thunderclap would be a litmus test for this. Support skills have 50% base learn rate, but Thunderclap has 33%. Therefore, it would be 99% if maxed learning tree is 300%. So, what causes the monsters in dungeons to respawn? I'd like to grind a bit, but it looks like just leaving them and then coming back in doesn't work most of the time.

>> No.7927314

>>7927274
They won't respawn until you leave and enter dungeons a number of times, which is why reaching a savepoint and going back for the treasures or clearing the route for a weak split party is a good idea. I'm not sure if staying in a dungeon a long time will have any effect on respawn or just exit and entering, but the monsters also don't respawn at the same time. For example, if you kill half the monsters, die a few times, and keep going, the earlier monsters you killed might respawn but not the later ones. This helps you crawl through a tough dungeon. You can kill as many monsters as you can, die if you don't get any rare drops, and then heal and walk back in and just take the now unguarded chests.

It is said that exiting (including dying) and entering a dungeon 30 times will respawn everything, though ideally you're constantly switching between different dungeons. The stuff you actually need to grind for are generally common items like Iron and Power Points and those are better gotten on earlier stages anyways.

I love the way the game goes with Reimu's jerkass rampage portray. Also, it subtly retains a number of canon points, like Momiji referring to Aya as "Shameimaru". She does big damage with her stances. This might not seem to matter when most mobs go down on one turn, but eventually you get to a point where everything is beefy as shit.

Also all her weapons have exorcism which mitigates those angel and demon's enemies absolute damage percent reduction. If they have 50% damage reduction then Youmu with a 25 exorcism katana will take away 25 of that leaving it at 25% damage reduction. 50 exorcism will leave it with no damage reduction. I'd put at least 20 in Katanas so her abilities have a chance to double hit. Her damage doesn't really shine unless you crit enemies, and increasing that chance will increase her damage to being able to do 2000-4000 damage to a single enemy with Slash of the Present, and 1000-2000 damage with Crescent Moon Slash. Of course, her damage when she doesn't crit is kind of mediocre, so I put 25 into Katanas and 13 into Manussya, with the rest going into Asura. Even Sakuya can't manage that sort of damage even though she has 140 more attack than Youmu, unless she gets her last word that is.

>> No.7927603

>>7927575
Again, depends on your formation. She's good with Mokou's formation because enemies have 75% chance of targeting the bait character. Patchy's low health is just a balance for being strong both magically and physically. You can have her spam spells, and once she runs out of MP or bombs you can swap her to physical powerhouse and keep going with her. Whereas for Satori, when I said she could be a strong physical character, it is because her two status effect trees also boost her physical attack, and learning tree boosts her blue magic as well, and so she can actually do decent to high damage at the end with powerful physical skills she learns.

Cirno starts with 3 HP

She's like 65 warrior/ 35 tank. All her good moves all use bombs though they do way more than low damage.

True. It's a sad thing too that later on the game goes full etrian. Alice/Defender permalocked into a slot of the party.

Also, Mokou's the closest thing one has in the game to a traditional RPG main character anyway. Tanky, does respectable damage and has a revive skill. Give her a return spell and she's a shining-series protagonist.

If you are using primarily marionnete pionnar in a line formation the shield stats are more important since you are technically shielding your party with your shield.
The higher the activation rate the better is it. So lets say if you are fighting a boss that uses dark magic, equip a dark shield and the boss will be doing 0damage to your party.

>> No.7927960

>>7927766
Well, I can see what team you probably use, but I'm going to disagree on pre final dungeon rankings because until stage ~18-20 the mob teams in general are very forgiving against elements.
1. Nothing out does Nitori if you have at least 2x all element attackers and even more so with Marisa/Sanae. Sanae, Satori, and Patchy in particular can wipe out most groups with a center forward in 1 round pre-ex.
2. While Alice makes bosses easier, for most of the random encounters she isn't great. Mach Punch/Kick can be used to act very fast even with the -25% action speed from Hinotori Skydance they can disable most breath mobs before they act which is better than defending against them.

Byakuren makes Sakuya and Youmu much better so I'd disagree with low for her, but she also doesn't get any good spammable dark spells so she kind of fails on normal mobs like Alice.

Not that you actually need a great party to finish most things though, planning is more important though there are some exceptions.

>>7927902
Either way that list lacks major consistency even for the mid game. Her fist skills are actually really good at inflicting the debuff, but they aren't great for damage which makes her an oddly good partner for Reisen if you can't fit 3-4 debuffs on Byakuren / Satori as she can fill up slots quickly and reliably. For the mid game debuff fists actually make everything too easy to the point that I avoided them.

Chasers don't do a ton of damage unless you are either:

A.) Hitting an elemental weakness

or

B.) Use Patchy to land mainpulate and bomb to raise an elements powers

Then chasers will hit very hard. Combine that with Patch, Maria and Satori using all the same buffed elemets for 3x, and you have a couple turn boss killing machine (if the boss has a elemental weakness and you use your 5th character to debuff)

Actually, Aya's not bad, you just need to use her for her niche and not as a main damager. While she has a multi-hit move and a damage all move, she's more of a support character. She gets a field spell that both increases your accuracy and evasion, and later in the game your accuracy actually matters as characters like Sakuya will miss with most of her attacks without any extra boosts. Aya has one move that guarantees accuracy for a turn and one that greatly boosts dodge. Think of her as an alternate Reimu at times.

Also, turn manipulation is useful for random encounters sometimes you just need to nuke the opponent before it nukes you, especially frail but deadly things like Flayers.

Lastly, she is the only character that can reflect breath attacks every turn, and this becomes increasingly important, because believe it or not Petro Breath isn't the worst of it. It really is sort of a third attack type category after physical and magical and Aya's the go-to character to take care of it.

Mini-reimu barrier around mid-late

Satori isn't a "set party member" as much as your own customizable character in many senses. Her overall utility is ridiculous.

Cons though are that she requires a stupidly high-level of dedication to "build" and an OCD's worst nightmare. Also, like most other kindergarten lolis she an't take any beating or she'll just plop over.

Actually, you practically don't have to grind at all for the main game. The bosses all focus on strategy.

It's just that if you want to get all the special equipment for everyone and constantly upgrade then you'd need to go hunting for items, Monster Hunger style. It's far from necessary though. You find plenty of regular equipment in chests and get items to make a couple forges so you can just play extremely conservatively with forging unique equipment.

Levels occasionally give you better skills, but for the most part levels cease to really matter after the beginning. Quite often leveling up makes almost no difference. Sometimes literally no difference in your core stats and just a few more HP and MP points that mean nothing.

As I said, the game's more about switching setups for different enemies and bosses. You definitely can't just plow through everything with a single high leveled party like Chrono Trigger. Each character has niches they're best suited for. For example, everyone seems to be blasting Aya as the worst character, but she makes some of the deadliest foes, especially dragons, much much easier.

1. What's a nice starter formation?
2, Does whoever you put into the commander slot get to participate in combat?
3. Does the commander unit gain experience and other stats or must that unit be in the party of five?
4. Do experience gains change depending on how many people are in the active party?

May have more questions if these get answered or if I'm arsed enough to trial and error my way through this without needing someone to hold my hand.

I have played and not grinded at all for the first ten stages, simply found all chests and fought most monsters in my way. I have however run away many times as well. It's not that hard if you use the walkthrough for bosses and party rebuilding for the stages.

I have a party of about level 26 and I've made it to Youkai Mountain.

As long as you can optimize your characters to a stage's enemies and run away from the ones that give real trouble you should be entirely fine. Also running is always an option in random encounters. Don't be afraid to pick your battles.

Satori is however bullshit in terms of learning spells.

Default starter formations. No, really, the default "Speed/Freefight" formation really isn't kidding when it says that even though it's the default, it's not useless. And Hakurei Type is great for a long time.

Commander gets full exp and is sort of a sixth ranger. On the battle menu you can access the commander's two commander skills by pressing C (or whatever button you mapped it to). The first costs 1 bomb and the second costs 3 bombs. In addition the commander you choose provides a passive benefit to your party. For example, Mokou's passive ability gives your party members a low random chance to survive killing blows, and her skills can revive one character a turn, or make your entire party very high chance to survive killing blows for the turn.

You should go with full party, won't affect exp. EXP is scaled to your level however so if you grind and overlevel you'll get lower and lower exp until you only receive 10%. Similarly low level characters catch up fast.

Either way I'd rather have Youmu/Sakuya (-res/+ind on important debuffs/buffs can turn bosses into rag dolls), Nitori, or Byakuren for Random battles excluding the post game characters.

But see, none of the other encounters warrant having Alice. None of them.

Besides, what could Alice do? There's 9 enemies, and each one does 200+ damage. Often WELL over 200; they're probably going to one-shot anyone who isn't a tank. If each one of them attacks once, Alice needs to withstand 5 very powerful attacks in a row, WITHOUT being able to cast any of her defensive spells. Even if she survives those 5 attacks, she'll go down soon after, and then whatever enemies remain will go about one-shotting your party. Keep in mind all this is assuming they all go after Alice right from the start.
When/if you finally do get a turn, you've either got to run or get lucky and have Patchy or Nitori left alive; you'll need to kill all of them at once with the tattered remains of your party, and these enemies resist every element except thunder. Trying to escape MIGHT work, but probably not; there's 9 of them, and at least one or two is going to attack before you get away, which would be enough at this point to kill you.

No chance. You have no chance.

My Sakuya have the same problem too. She's my main damage output.

I usually just use Jack the Ludo Bile most of her damage. It's also a good choice if you have the double attack skill, since that tend to really rape your mana if it procs on a 12 MP move ( and JLB will hit 2-4 times for 6 MP!). My damaging strat in boss fights are buffs/debuffs/enchant weakness on Sakuya's weapon > Private Square then burst them down. I conserve my mana with JLB like before. Even Genji died in 3 turns, though that's probably due to Youmu also critting for 6k.

The key to managing her MP for me, is to not use any 12 MP moves unless I know it's going to do insane damage. I specialized my Sakuya is multi hit attacks though.

In boss fights, Youmu can hold her own constant damage output, and still burst along side Sakuya after I give her Byakuren's enchants too. I find Aya useful for her support skills, she can send up an attacker you're not confident can act before a potentially party wiping attack might occur on the first turn to take it out or if you're really not confident the entire team can go first. Allows you to sweep enemies that would normally wipe your entire party. The fact that helmet fairies have all targeting magic is incredibly dangerous if I don't kill them first.

Also am I the only one building Byakuren for IND? I've gotten her to like 136 IND and make her use her makai butterfly and makai temptation spells if I want to make a group of enemies less dangerous. It's surprisingly effective. Her casting can also be supported by Aya as well so I could potentially have the entire enemy party charmed at the very start.

Reimu has been lackluster for me since I don't heal much and instead focus on a kill or be killed style of strategy.

>> No.7932235

>>7932222
Quite the opposite. I don't know if time still plays a factor in the overall calculation of things, but the critical factor is leaving and exiting (and dying in) dungeons. Enemies will definitively not respawn until you leave a dungeon no matter how long you stay inside it. Leaving and entering any dungeon counts toward the hidden respawn counter for the enemies, and enemies in the same dungeon can respawn at different times if you died or left in between. Ideally you just alternate between different dungeons, but if you really want to immediately respawn a dungeon right away, just keep entering and exiting it.

So considering your limited supplies, who's unique weapons are worth getting?

Physical damage dealers like Sakuya and Youmu will generally want to get their weapons upgraded more than magic users. That's just what I think though.

Things with effects you like. Don't do it just for higher numbers.

Sakuya, Youmu and Nitori benefit the most IMO. Marisa should get at least one upgraded broom for the 2x MP regen. Byakuren's weapons are also the only ones that use Magic Medals, so if you're not the accessories type of guy you can upgrade those if you have the spare X tier ingredients.

Inner Eientei must have broke my stride or something. I'm just not doing as good as I was before.

it's normal some stages are more challenging than others due to the mobs, just wait until that stage where you split up into 3 groups, one of the areas are packed with petro breaths and the other with mindflayer type squids
