You realize that the point of smart phones is all the stuff it does OTHER than the phone, right? My "phone" is also an mp3 player, a GPS, and quick access to anything on the internet (restaurant reviews, bank accounts, streaming audio, and web comics most relevant). And that's just the tip of the iceberg. With the thousands of free apps out there, my phone also has been used as a level when hanging pictures, a flashlight (using the camera LEDs, oh yeah, my phone is also a camera/camcorder with the ability to instantly upload content online), it can listen to a song on the radio and tell me what it is, its google maps, its fucking star chart when I want it to be. And ALL of this comes in one device. Smart phones are amazing.

Having said that, this comes at the cost of having constant access to all this information. I find it harder to learn because I feel like I don't need to know the information itself, I just need to know where I can quickly find the information. If I ever lost my phone I would probably be shit out of luck.

Back on the subject of Japanese phones, I LOVE the Sharp Aquos 007sh. It's a large flip phone, but the screen swivels around it can also be a touch screen phone. It's running Android 2.3 and has a 16MP camera. I want one, but I doubt it's ever coming stateside, and even if it does it will be so out of date by the time it gets here that it probably won't be worth getting. It looks pretty sweet in black.

I also forgot to mention that smart phone provides instant access to school, work, and personal email.

My phone is one of those flip flop whatever types. I like that kind of models the most and getting a smartphone would be extremely useless. My phone is mainly an alarmclock all the time so I dont need to waste a fortune for a fancy clock. So yes, smartphones are a waste of time and money.

>> No.7880175

Flip flop phones are much more resistant than smartphones. Your dumbphone fall one time and you can buy another. A flip flop with touchscreen is a god like combination. Sadly we won't get any before 2050 because nokia still want to sell phones made of wood and the asian companies have discovered we are stupid technological retarded baka gaijin that will buy every outdated shit they thrown at us. Otherwise there's no reason to buy one. At least not an expensive one, because why have a fancy phone you're locked outside of? However, there are Keitais running for like 100$ which work flawlessly except for the classic issues (No MMS or internet). These low-end Jap phones are superior to low-end Western phones. Big screens, nice buttons, decent cameras, lots of characters to use in SMS, clamshell, exotic and stylish.

Japanese phones have been very similar to western smartphones since.. before smartphones became big in the west.

They don't tend to have a common universal OS as it becoming common here, but, they still browse the web/get email and can read those little black/white square symbols, which work by you taking a picture of it and that symbol will then take you to a website; it's easier than typing out a URL on your phone, and sometimes special promo offer sites can only be accessed through those little symbols.

They also can use their phones to pay for parking, train/subway, vending machines, get live updates on where the trains are on a route / link up with the station to see exactly when the train is supposed to get there, and all sorts of other nifty things.

Basically the only thing their phones don't have are large appstores. And even then, the iphone used to not be that popular over there at first, because it was seen as being like a brick compared to what typical Jap phones can do. Once the appstore started to localize over there (e.g apps useful/interesting to Japanese started to pop up), now the iphone is massively popular; this signifies that western-type smartphones are indeed catching up there if only so they can have silly apps, like the one in that Cosmic Break iphone app thread floating around here.

The Japanese do a lot of shit with their phones much more than the average American.

With a Japanese phone and depending which Japanese bank you're under, you can even use your cellphone as a substitute wallet to pay for subway fares, taxis and food.

Also, all Japanese cellphones have come with such features like TV tuners for decades.

The Japanese phone market is also too hardcore for Apple censors to take. Apple's censorship of adult apps is just too strict when it comes to the kinds of content some Japanese want.

Not only that, but Japanese people don't really enjoy touchscreen keyboards. They prefer touching actual keys.

It's not surprising coming from a culture where cell phone novels are very popular in Japan, especially among the teen crowd, to the extent some cell phone novels have even been made into movies or TV dramas.

iPhones also have too high a monthly plan at $60 a month. The Japanese phone market is so competitive that average monthly plans are always dirt cheap.

Furthermore, not many Japanese actually own personal computers as you expect they would. Why?

Because their phones are already good enough to substitute as personal computers, so there's not much need to buy a real personal computer.

And cellphones are also seen as fashion accessories by the Japanese. The iPhone just looks plain bland compared to its Japanese competitors.

Foreign smartphones are still lagging behind Japanese cellphones in terms of USEFUL features even though iPhones etc. are flashier and have a sleeker interface.

The only shitty thing about Japanese cellphone is the awful interface, but with the introduction of theAndroid OS to the Japanese phone market, things may change for the better, and people around the globe should be able to buy these Japanese cellphones when they become available.

Because of retarded American bureaucracy, greed, and capitalism; it will be fucking years before we have something like a refined 4G or 5G cellular network.

On the other hand, Japan & South Korea are spending hundreds of millions of dollars developing such advanced cellular networks.

America still hasn't even come close to the high internet speeds South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong people get to enjoy on a daily basis.

No matter how you retards keep praising on about smartphones, realize that Japanese cellphones have essentially no limits nor restrictions to innovation due to their advanced cellular networks their country has built for them

I still can't get over the fact people got excited years ago over a 3G iPhone. Wow, 3G is sure is something to get excited over, huh?

Stay classy, you cocksucking, ignorant Appletards.

Apparently the Keitai models released in Taiwan and China work with 3G data, like internet, e-mail and such.

And if those are the models that those chinese sellers on E-bay are selling, they're actually cheaper as well. But there's probably a catch.

As I understand it, some of the phones have different features. For example, the Sharp 923SH is the Japanese version and you'd need to use a hypersim and stuff but the phone might be media locked so you can't use media or the camera or whatever. The Sharp 9020C is the same phone, but the Chinese version. The phone is unlocked so you can use the internet, camera, etc without a hypersim, however there is no 3G on the phone compared to the 923SH that has it.

I never understood the need for something faster then 3G.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S2, I'm satisfied with H+, I can load jewtiube vids in 720p not that my phone has such a high resolution, but it loads perfectly, I can stream videos, i can chat over skype, I can even download torrents at decent speeds.

I mean what the point. I have a 1GB limit monthly for my 3G. I had the Samsung Galaxy S2 for like it's 5 months now...I got it in April?

Anyways most I have used a month is like 654 MB...

So why do we need 4G or 5G? What are you going to do with it? Are you going to download FULL HD stuff on it? And view it on a qHD screen?

3G is more then we need right now for mobile devices like phones.

Above 3G is something you'd like for your mobile internet connection if oyu have a laptop or a PC somewhere where theres no cable or DSL.

You're in luck. I've been researching this especially hard for a few weeks myself to buy a new model. I ain't got a list, but I've got some tips and examples.

Basically, the two main companies Keitai fans are interested in are called Sharp and Softbank.

The reasons why the Japanese phones are locked are complicated and uninteresting, but it has its root in the fact that the Japanese don't buy phones, only contracts.

Sharp makes traditional Keitas for the Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese markets, most of their non-jap phones works with 3G internet and such, their genuine Japanese phones do not. The hardcore Keitai fans especially like their Chinese android phones (No smartphone crap, these are still flip-phones.). Softbank makes chinese phones too, but apparently the 3G data on their phones usually don't work.

So, if you want a a cool gook flip-phone, Sharp is your best bet.

Some Chinese Sharp models common with Gaijin scum:
9020c
SH809UC
1810c
SH7218u

These aren't gutter creations by hobos. They're high quality stuff. More or less exact reproductions of their Jap equivalents (9020c is 920sh, for example). Some fans prefer the subtle changes, actually. These non-jap versions does not require hypersims or that bullshit either, which is a huge plus.

(Continued)

However, they aren't cheap, contrary to what that other poster said, however. Expect SH7218u to cost something like 5-600$. Some phones can be found on ebay, but they are usually overpriced. Import from China if you wish, the cost of phones is less, but expect the same hassle as when buying doujins and such. Middlemen all over, most likely. But I'm not sure.

Research is the key to this, no matter what phone you buy. Internet doesn't necessarily have to work correctly, even on a Chinese handset. Howardforums.com has an excellent section for Japanese Phones, I suggest you go there to check things out. And rev up your search engines.

There are also genuine Japanese phones which should work with internet, but on an individual basis, to say the least.

(Japanese Softbank phones with half-confirmed internet capabilities)
933SH
707SC
740SC

I have an 740SC and it aint working.

In the end I will probably run with a Lenovo P90W. It's cheap, around 100$. Not a true-blooded Keitai, but Simple, flip form, Internet that should work, but very few english comments about this handset exist, so who knows how well it works? But with the price, the gamble is worth it. I feel that a 600$ android monstrosity would cause to many tears if it doesn't work. If I'll ever see another keitai thread I might report my findings.

I hope my Berlin wall of text answers your tiny request for a thread. Such massive commitment and research is necessary for Keitai people.

Is your H+ for HSDPA or HSPA+? Regardless, you're on a network that's already faster than standard 3G.

Also it's not just about HD video. As the devices become more capable, people do more things with them and expect snappier service.

Some additional models:
SH7218U
SH6320C
SH7228U
The Lenovo P85 (more or less a copy of a panasonic keitai)

I suggest browsing j-phone.ru just to get a look at some phones. The sharp models with the longer names are usually Chinese.

becasue english-speaking countries find typing on number keys difficult and need QWERTY.

In Japanese, typing on a number is very well suited.

Also, "smartphones" are really no different then Japanese phones, which have long has advanced internal parts that ran similar "apps"

I have a cheap android (Samsung Galaxy 5 or some shit) and while it's serviceable I think I prefer flip-phones. I wouldn't mind a Jap phone because they're a lot nicer to look at and probably hold, plus I don't make a lot of calls.

When mobile carriers start making plans with high data but low call credit, and Sharp/Softbank expand out of Asia I might finally pick one up. Until then it's just too much of a pain in the ass, so I'll stick with a prepaid.

Pity Ausfag telcos are all jews who charge $2/MB for prepaid 'net usage.

I have this Corean thing that cost $100 and it's $35 a month for unlimited data. Maybe I'll get a proper keitai in a few years, but right now I don't see a logical selling point to have one over what I currently own. The biggest problem with smartphones is carriers often cripple a machine's capabilities to justify a lower monthly charge.
