Honestly, when I first saw anime with those suits, I thought they were dumb. They're about the only thing in anime I still think are dumb. They way they hide the hips is completely unsexy. Even bloomers which I thought were colored panties at first turned out to not be that bad even in reality, but those swimsuits just look even worse when they're not all shiny and slick like in anime style images. Even worse is that they tend to cover the butt in back so you can't even see that.
