What is the worst VN you've ever read?

God almighty that was one stupid and dull eroge. I cannot fathom how someone could possibly like it.

some title of the escalation series.

I thought I could stand it because it has yuri, turned out too shitty for me. and the first one was actually decent..

Yume Miru Kusuri.
Close second is just about any and all nukige.

>> No.7863228

Tsukihime

Hated all the female characters except Satsuki, then she got killed. Then I completed all the routes anyway because I hate myself

In fairness, I haven't really read many VNs, but that one has been the worst so far

Majikoi or Monster Girl Quest. They are awful and represent the lowest common denominator. Both are technically train wrecks and have absolutely no literary merit.

However, they were both so bad that they were actually readable. Granted, I made sure to get really wasted before reading each, but if you do get shitfaced, you can make it through and enjoy both of them.

The only VN that I have started and just completely abandoned was Symphonic Rain. It's definitely "better" than both Majikoi and Monster Girl Quest. However, I found it absolutely unenjoyable.

>> No.7863270

probably this, but I'm not sure if it counts since it was so obviously low-quality that it doesn't even count among official studios that make money, otherwise it'd be H2O

I agree that Monster Quest was boring, but I'm sure it was partly because of the translation.
Overall, everything translated by Dark Translations is painful to read.

>>7863261

You didn't like Monster Girl Quest? I mean, I'm not saying it was any kind of literary achievement or anything, but it was cute and charming in that innocent noblebright sort of way

>> No.7863463

>>7863394

Actually, I did like it, it was just "technically bad". Contrast to Symphonic Rain which is "technically good" but I didn't like it. At all.

Monster Girl Quest had so many things that had been done to death before that it had a cute charm to it and I 100% agree with you that it is charming.

If we could replace the protagonist with someone like Rance and the game was about raping monsters rather than vore and submission, I probably would have found it really really enjoyable (but still lacking merit).

As it was, it was "readable". Contrast to things which are not readable.

But the thing is, it's not good. It's really bad and derivative. And poorly executed. Even someone who enjoys it should recognize that it's not something substantive.

Learn to keep critical distance separate from enjoyment.

I like eating McDonald's. I like French Laundry. They are two very different kinds of pleasures.

People should always be free to like what they like but they should not be in the dark as to what it is that they are enjoying. Ignorance is not bliss. A night spent drinking and sleeping with a skank is not the same as a romantic night with someone you love. Both should be enjoyed in different ways and recognized for their varying levels of depth.

tl:dr. Knowing whether or not something is good or bad can actually help you enjoy it for what it really is and can help you enjoy it thoroughly. Not knowing it is a weakness.

>> No.7863559

planetarian.

the entire time the story is going on, there's several thoughts going on through my head: when does the interesting part start? the main character is a survivalist and he's doing things directly against the spirit of survival - why? because he's so "enthralled" by this technology?

so the entire time i'm reading along, i can't help but feel like "okay, this part is going to go on for about another twenty minutes and then he's going to take her to junker town or something and that's where the real story starts" - but it doesn't come. It never comes. Instead, you get multiple "days" happening in the same zone.

eventually they leave, some action stuff happens, you hear of some tragic information about her past, the end.

Oh god why didn't I listen to all the people who said it really was terrible

I thought 'how bad can it be?'
But it really was that bad.

There is something very wrong with your argument that I can't quite place.
There has to be something wrong when you're coming up with reasons to not like something that you could like with no repercussions.

Perhaps it's because you're treating 'depth' as the most critical part of the story. While I do agree that depth done well is a good thing, a story doesn't need to be deep to be good.
There is nothing wrong with saying you enjoyed something charming and funny done well more than something deep and thoughtful that didn't click with you.

Stories are just as much about the ideas they contain as they are about effectively conveying the ideas in a way you sympathise with and enjoy.

I think the problem is, the ability to distance your feeling/perceiving self from your judgment/intellectual self.

The thing is that certain stories can reach us extremely well because we want to hear what they are saying. Other stories are saying what we don't want to hear but they are saying it really well.

A friend of mine asked me why I hated slice of life so much. She said it would be like hating "Calvin and Hobbes". I told her I hated Calvin and Hobbes. She said that was stupid, it was like hating "mother" or the comfort of going home.

It was then I realized exactly why I hated those things. For me, going home... I never knew what would happen behind those doors. Will my mom be crying? Will my sister be bleeding? That's what "going home" meant to me, and that's why I can't fucking stand "slice of life". It's disgustingly fake to me. I can't even comprehend "peaceful days". The most surprising twists or horrible revelations.... are the only things that make me feel at home.

So for me, I can appreciate things on two levels. The first is just a raw gut reaction. The second is how I relate to it after it boils over a bit.

Monster Girl Quest and Majikoi are like eating 0 calorie ice cream. Enjoyable while it lasts... but you get nothing from it.

The h2o VN wasn't even close to being that bad. The anime was a completely different story.

Pretty hard to say. off the top of my head for english released novels that actually try to be serious soul link would be pretty far up there.
For Japanese I'd actually have to think a long while and browse over my list of played games.

Harem/Moe/Nukige don't ever tend to be that bad, just so mediocre that you don't remember anything about them unless it was your gateway to the genre or a personal favorite route/character. The same could be said for most of the pre-2000 games that would be terrible by today's standards.
