How do they call VNs without porn in Japan? You know, stuff like Steins;Gate, Clannad, Umineko or Amagami.

Galge.

>> No.7858027

>Steins;Gate, Clannad, Umineko or Amagami.

It's shit, right?

>> No.7858030

galge for everything except Umineko, which is a sound novel. Ever17's official genre is Ren'ai Adventure Game too

>> No.7858032

>>7858019
You are right to be ashamed of yourself. They're all called VN for one. The ones with harems are called dating simulations. The ones with porn are branded as eroge.

>> No.7858034

ADV or galge.

>> No.7858035

ADV, IIRC.

>> No.7858041

If you have a name for the opposite, just use the negation, silly.
Non-Eroges

>> No.7858044

VNs with and without porn are called ADVs. Not all eroge are ADVs. Not all ADVs are eroge.
Learn how punnet squares work.

>> No.7858047

with porn - eroge
without porn - visual novel

Nobody in Japan call eroge as VN

And ADV stand as adventure game, just subgenre for VN and eroge.

>How do they call VNs without porn?

VNs. Also, Umineko is a sound novel, aka shitty art but awesome OST.

wrong, visual novel is that format that has the text all over the window like a book, it's used only for a handful of games like FSN and similar, it's not really used that much. Games without porn are usually galge, bishoujo game or adventure.

>> No.7858057

Steins;Gate doesn't have porn?

I am quite disappointed...

Than all VNs should be more like sound novels. I hate it that most of them spend so much effort in silly voice packs. I don't even bother installing them nowadays.

>> No.7858065

They CALL it VN if it doesn't have porn. It doesn't mean that it's not VN if it have porn, they just don't CALL it that.

but they don't, "visual novel" is rarely used by japanese at all and they use other words for non-ero games

They call erotic stuff Eroge.
Otherwise they call it Visual Novels, Galge or ADV or whatever, depending on the work.

OP was specifically asking about Japan since they don't use the term "Visual Novel", great to see so many visual_novel_experts ITT

ADV or NVL depending on the textbox.

Very dumb, indeed.

I said it's rarely used, not that it doesn't exist. On 2ch and egs you basically never see people calling games like Steins;Gate and such visual novels. You can check their wiki pages to see their designated genre too, isn't internet awesome?

>> No.7858125

>sound novel
That term was basically coined by Ryu07 for the sole reason that was him being somewhat embarresed over the visuals of his electronic book with sound and supposed visuals.

The problem is they don't call them in ANY other way. "Galge" "eroge" and so on are terms that the community uses to refer to certain cathergories but it's not like they have to specify the cathegory each single game belongs to any time they talk about them.

Simply put they don't use "visual novel" or "sound novel" as a term in their everyday discussions. But if you were to ask them what genre of game is "Higurashi" or "Umineko" they would either answer "sound novel" or "visual novel". There's really no other term.

>Simply put they don't use "visual novel" or "sound novel" as a term in their everyday discussions.
Yeah, and this is what we're talking about. That guy was saying they call just non-porn game that way though, and it's not true.

>> No.7858202

The term VN should only be used if the game has no other interaction than to click to advance text and make choices.
If there is puzzle solving, it should be a puzzle game.
If it has rpg elements it could be an rgp or adventure game.
If it has little rythm minigames, it should be a rythm game and so on.

Eroge is a very broad term that could include any game containing porn.

Sound novel is just a silly term, since the visual elements are much more important in understanding the game (for example, the MC never has a voice so if you dont read the text you're missing half of the story.)

the text is part of "novel" portion of the term.

Yeah?
I thought the term ´novel´ was there because it is narrative divided in chapters.
But I guess I was wrong.
