I've always figured this preference to be highly correlated to the environment you grew up in, just like how sukumizu fetish really only occurs if you went to school in Japan (or watch a lot of animu featuring school life in Japan).

Fuck pantyhose, it's all about the tights. Sheer is for sluts. Opaque is pure.

That said, I love both tights and stockings. Each has their own benefits. Tights provide that unique feeling of being completely clad in something, while stockings allow you to feel the swish and sway of the skirt around your legs as you walk. Tights don't have that bothersome issue of falling down all the time (not a fan of garter belts), while stockings provide that awesome image (to me, anyways) of a girl riding cowgirl and her skirt hiding all that's happening while still having those nice, shapely, black legs.
