Why is Reimu so bad at her job? She's suppose to protect man's soul yet she allows aliens, mutants and heretics to openly tread upon the holy grounds of her own shrine.

Hell, the human villagers are probably almost as intimidated by the crazy flying miko and her pet witch as they are by the youkai. Apart from a scant handful of humans, her various youkai friends are the only people she can really talk to on an equal level.

You never see her interacting with normal people. Marisa seems pretty sociable and I bet everyone she meets likes her. But if Reimu wants followers, she needs to be down there working it, not drinking tea on the veranda.

But townspeople aren't too afraid of weirdos, from what I've read. If they fear Reimu it would be because of her character in particular.

She still can't interact with them on anything like an equal level. She's just too far above them in terms of her power and responsibilities - they can either respect or fear her, but they can't really be friends.

I'm kind of reminded of the witches of the Discworld in that sense. Both her and Marisa share quite a lot with Granny Weatherwax and Nanny Ogg respectively, come to think of it.

Also a lot of the IN cast interacts with the human village every now and then, Keine and Mokou in particular, despite one being a sorta-werewolf and the other being immortal. Pretty sure Eirin or Reisen deal sell medicine, Tewi grants luck to people, and Kaguya had the five challenges thing going for her until they realized she'll never die.

The villagers are confirmed to not even know that Reimu is the one that solves incidents according to BAiJR, nor is there any sign that they even know her or who the Hakurei shrine maiden is. The main reasons of Reimu's lack of followers are her ancestors' incompetence and the fact that she befriended youkai and constantly invites everyone she's beaten up for parties. The huge, dangerous youkai-filled forest right in front of her shrine doesn't help either.

Keine is still half-human, Akyuu (?) says that were-hakutaku are not considered youkai filth and are treated with care. Mokou is still human as well. The only youkai in the Eientei cast would be Tewi, and she's a sign of good luck.

Nah I'm sure they know who she is. Gensokyo is tiny and Touhous get around. For a long time there was only one shrine in the place, and she's obviously a miko. I think the name of the shrine is somewhat forgotten. That might be in CoLA. I know that people don't know much about the shrine or what Reimu does. I presume they have a handle on the whole "shoots youkai with danmaku" thing.

Even Yuka is allowed inside the village as long as she makes sure not to get carried away and make a mess. Reisen sells medicine there on Eirin's behalf too. They're completely okay with harmless youkai.

She does farm, the manga shows that she has a garden filled with fruit trees, veggies and other food sources, she also makes her own tea. She's also been shown fishing huge ass fishes.
