On /jp/, it's when I get a good idea and think that /jp/'s comments and constant change of perspective could make for some fun. It was easy when Umineko was running because if you had an idea that might interest people AND you were proficient in thread genesis, the default shit thread could actually become good, since the bounds of logic we thought Umineko had made the threads somehow easy to moderate. There used to be TM threads too. While I do have some ideas for interesting 300+ post TM threads about questions never asked before, I am not sure the thread would be good.

It's harder with Touhou, but usually you need some new material or just a new and fresh combination of old concepts. Hard to explain. "Do you think that Touhou x does y" can be that, but it's hard to pull it off right.

Finally, everything that is newly translated makes for instant decent material. Picture dump is only good if it has stuff that hasn't been reposted 141 times, or even better, stuff that you personally spent time searching for on Pixiv.
