What a coincidence that I found this thread. I've just started on the Tsukihime visual novel, and I got to ask, is this characters more stupid than Shirou? Because as far as I can see, he is clearly on the same level if not worse. I actually had to go outside for a few minutes just to catch my breath when he could not comprehend that the brown haired girl basically screamed "FUCK ME PLEASE!" in his face at the beginning and he did not react to this in any way.

This isn't because he is socially inept or anything of the sort. Rather, its because he is in self-denial that he himself is worth anything worthy of joy, or how anyone could/should ever love an empty husk such as him, who does nothing but walk that one path, through the barren fields of blades.

In other social situations he is actually indeed portrayed somewhat of the opposite. That is, Shirou is actually a quite good people knower. The insight he have in other peoples' lives often discerns deep and multiple layers of their nature including many details of which they themselves very well might not be directly aware of.

As far as his ideal goes, he is aware of the nature of his ideal.
But yet again he persists due to a mix of denial and utter persistance manifested in the form of a sort of mental lock on his part, originating from childhood trauma, and from having been raised by a comparably delusioned fool, as well as having had a strong magical artifact integrated into his circuits from early childhood.

None of this makes Shirou neither abnormally dense, nor stupid or anything of the sort.
In fact, it makes him a very sharp individual albeit with severe sense of self-worth problems and an obsession with an ideal none asked him to tackle by himself, or at all.

He does do some stupid shit, however. Mostly it is the gag choices put in at various points, but those choices can leave you with a bad end. Outside of them most of his idiocy is limited to his ideal making him say and do things that are obviously, to the reader, the wrong things. Or that one time he stripped Issei down in the school to check for command seals with no explanation.
