how do you think google makes its money? behaviour analysis, that's how. they take your data (that's your emails), combine this with the stuff they get from Google Analytics, Recaptcha, Google Search cookies, Google Maps/Latitude and a billion other tracking services and build an educated guess to your interests and things you'd pay for, and they use it to show 'more relevant ads'.

this is all well-documented. it's not conspiracy theory, it's just stuff that Google admits to. and I personally find this creepy. Especially if it starts recommending things that I'd rather not let others know about.

And considering that social media and cloud computing is the way of the future, efforts to monetize will only become more overt from now on. they have the capability to screw you over (e.g. sell your physical location to advertisers so that personalized ads yelling your name can move from screen to screen as you do) and they stand to make a lot of money from it. why wouldn't they?
