Oh boy... I'm not quite sure I know what to say. It's not that I didn't expect this to happen, exactly this way. (What I mean by that is "I expected an inexperienced, amateur translator would start translating Higanbana right away") What I didn't expect, though, was that Higanbana would be so short, which means that an upstart TL project actually has a rather good chance of FINISHING it. It's being translated at anime fansub speeds right now, but even at this rate, it could be fully translated in as little as two months. I'm not Moogy, I don't hate everyone who translates without being Makoto, so it's not that I'm saying "this project is doomed to suck and fail," I'm more just saying "I hope the stars align and everything turns out OK."

The entire script requires retranslation, nobody is willing to TLC it because it's so terrible, and the original translator has disappeared after retranslating the first script, probably because he realized it'd be too much work to fully retranslate everything.

Hm, given his name and what he's translating, I'd say I/O would be a better pick. The Never7 translator decided to translate it after Never7, but it'll take ages until that's finished (no offense meant; you're trying your best and I'm grateful for it, but I really would like to play I/O before 2014). Maybe the Never7 translator can then translate Root Double instead after Never7!

From what I can tell, each of Takumi Nakazawa's games is radically different despite having a lot of similarities. From what I heard of I/O, the plot is not as complex as Ever17's or Remember11's, but the story as a whole is very interesting in a different way. Also, the cast seems to be huge.

As for the infinity universe...officially, only Never7, Ever17 and Remember11 are part of the infinity universe. 12Riven takes place in a different universe, despite it having similarities to the infinity series. (Also, Takumi Nakazawa did not work on 12Riven.) I/O is unofficially part of the infinity series from what I've heard. Root Double is currently being directed by Takumi Nakazawa, but we have no confirmation on what universe it's supposed to be in. It has a very infinity-like feel to it, though. Code18 is a new title that is officially part of the infinity series, but none of the original staff is working on it and it's going to suck.

Never7 translator, here to answer a few questions:

Infinity was the first version of Never7, made for the PS1. It only had the first five routes of Never7. Everything that was in that game was in Never7.

In between the two, another game, Infinity CURE was released for the Neo Geo Pocket. This had two routes: the Cure Route, and the Yuka Cure Route (a sidestory that took one of the game's routes and had you play it through the heroine's perspective).

In Never7 (which was released for the Dreamcast), it had all of the routes from Infinity, added the Cure Route as a route (the original fifth route was still in the game, but was more of a "gag" route now), and Yuka Cure was added in as a side-story (which is what I'm translating right now).

Well I did read that Makoto was a translation checker for the muv-luv and muv-luv alternative projects and I respect him for that.
Also according to his tlwiki profile page he has worked on Saya no Uta, Jouka no Monshou, Kikokugai and Hanachirasu. So yes, I have to admit that he is really awesome.
Dedicated people like him are very rare. Most of the translators work on 2 or 3 projects and stop. But he, Ixrec and TakaJun... amazing guys!

I'm not exactly pissed at him for doing this. From what I think to be true, Ixrec just wanted to give credit to âge for the masterwork they created. If I were in his place I would do that too if the Visual Novel was that good. But yeah, he messed up by having a beta patch leaked. And now everyone has to either wait for a lot of months for a possible (?) commercial release or play a half-assed beta patch.

This delay gives time for people to get through other Visual Novels though. And that is good in my opinion.

Lastly, I just hope that the translation of Steins;Gate is of excellent quality. And I can't wait for Majikoi's full patch, I loved the prologue of the VN.

Technically, the first long fan-translated Visual Novel ever is Wind - A breath of heart -
Gipface wasn't yet the super troll he later would become, and was an idealist young fellow.
So when NNL finished the Wind patch, they distributed the patch, only inside the team.
But they also distributed the patch to people who could actually prove that they owned the original game.
So, to get the patch, you had to break the support disk that came with the Wind DVD, so you could read something that could only be read on a broken support disc.
Now, the patch was never leaked because, pretty much unlike Ammy, they could keep a secret patch secret.
So, no patch for anyone.
Of course later, Gippy discovered that Minori didn't give a damn about him, nor the rest of the filthy gaijins, so he released the patch, this time, for everyone.
Gip would later go further, releasing a standalone version of Ef (Which probably will be bettar that the upcoming oficcial version)
Nowadays Gippy is a tamed troll, working with MG.
But the dream lives on.

I seriously cannot give that guy enough respect. I've been taking a look at some of his scripts on TLwiki, and they definitely seem fairly good, and even then, he wants to do a second pass of translation just to make sure it's as best as it can be.
He translates with a machine-like dedication, updating scripts almost every single day for the past year (with one month-long vacation)...He's reminiscent of Ixrec in his glory days.
Aside from all that, he doesn't troll, he doesn't partake in supercilious elitist hipsterism, and he doesn't troll the community right and left.

To give you some more concrete information, the last update to the SVN for the rewrite trial translation was in May (i.e., no updates since LoSs read the game). There is no easy way for me to tell you how much of the trial has actually been translated, but I know it is a good bit more than the 11k lines quoted ITT (VNTS-kun simply prefers not to speculate, I guess, but that figure is from almost a year ago, and I can assure you there have been numerous SVN revisions since that date). If you care enough and have even the faintest inkling of what you are doing, it isn't difficult to quickly patch your own copy of the trial with whatever translated work has been produced so far. Since it's so easy to find everything you need, I'm not going to tell you how to.

Now, when it comes to LoSs, in his defense, he has read many, many hundreds more novels than you, making his scope of experience one of the only in the community large enough to be called comprehensive. You have no idea whether or not Ever17 is a good game (protip: it's not), because you've never even had the CHANCE to be exposed to a full 99% of the VNs in existence. When LoSs says "my taste > your taste", it's for your own good.
