The most common plot for Renko and Maribel doujins is lesbianism in Japan and how it doesn't let them live out their love. One of those even goes as far as to have Maribel get pregnant and married to some guy through an arranged marriage. Just because "it's the right thing to do to gain acceptance in the eyes of society". It ends with Renko visiting Maribel, who has now given birth to her husband's child, and after some reminiscing they burst out into tears of grief and sadness.

I can see the appeal of that, yeah. I think the best possible story would come of the two going hand-in-hand, though; having the dangers and trials of a completely new world testing and strengthening their bond.

Also, I reeeeeeeeeally probably shouldn't say this, but one of the Shrinemaiden text adventures explored this very idea about a year ago. It put the players in control of Mary and had the added storytelling bonus of spawning them in separate locations without knowledge of where they were, how they got there, or where the other one was.

It was only text, yeah, but it was far better story telling than you're going to see in any doujin. It lasted over two months and had about 8900 posts total. If you're looking for a GFC Adventure Time *story*, it'll do you better than any doujin you'll find.

But yes, I suppose it's extremely hard to replace pictures with text.

Then I wonder how the outside world is like in the age of Reimu and Co. Renko and Mary wanted to board a flight to the moon, right? That was hundreds of years ago, perhaps in the current age of Gensokyo mankind is some kind of abstract, interstellar civilization far beyond our understanding.

That is, of course, unless Mary actually went back in time, or something similar.
