If ZUN thought about the mythology a bit, he might say that Meiling is now the Dragon of the lake next to the mansion. Most Dragons are territorially associated with a body of water, either oceans, rivers, lakes or even wells.

Meiling is a worthless joke of a character. Even in her own group, she's basically a space-filler. In all the canon works save Hisoutensoku, she gets about as much screen time and development as a table lamp. Her job at the SDM is essentially pointless, as the only time she had to actually repel people trying to force their way in was in EoSD, and we all know how well she accomplished that. The rest of the time she's little more than something like a Wal-Mart greeter.

And this is coming from someone who likes Meiling.

Don't get me wrong guys, I love Meiling. She somehow managed to work her way into being my favorite. That doesn't change the fact that she has her problems.

The only reason she's so damn worthless is because of her abilities, which are lackluster at best. She's a martial artist, according to canon, so pretty much in a straight up non-magic fight with anyone, she will beat the shit out of them. Thing is, everyone has magic or some stupid power, which makes her absolutely useless in a fight.

She's probably the only character with any physical training, and the rest just rely on stupid powers.

As far as her status as a gate guard, she's good at keeping the normal riffraff out, which is kind of her job. As far as the other characters, she's by far the nicest. As long as you don't try to get through the gate, she's downright pleasant to anyone, which is much more than can be said for even the main protagonists...which means she's also probably the easiest to romance if you so desire.

Red hair marks her as a generic Chinese demon, although that's a pretty fuzzy answer.
Her name and rainbow imagery suggests a hong dragon, but that too gets a bit messy since dragons are treated as a very distinct "unreachable" sort of creature in Touhou.

I'll need to think long and hard about this matter the next time I get properly drunk. There's got to be an answer.

That ain't happening. Kirins are even higher tier than Dragons. In fact, by definition Kirins are the very pinnacle of animal deities. The Nature God of Mononke Hime was an interpretation of a Kirin.

In comparison Dragons are not uniform in power. You have Dragon Gods who rule oceans, but yo also have minor dragons who live in tiny wells. This is partly due to the fact that Dragons can be generate from low tier animals. The most popular portrayal is Fish Dragons.

As I said earlier, I am more inclined to believe Meiling is a dragon because she seem to hang around outdoors more often than inside. And outside the mansion near the front gate is a big lake.

That's just a historical gaff. Some Chinese explorers went to Africa and brought back a Giraffe, claiming it is a Kirin. Never-mind that the description don't match.

Kirins don't show up much in Chinese folklore, mostly because they are only ever suppose to be sighted when something major (and positive) happened. Like the birth of a very important person. Can't really write stories about them if they are meant to be elusive.

Only 5 clawed dragons are Imperial. And even then Emperors don't get to order Kirins around. They show up when they feel like it.

And we are sort of going into a different territory. There are two types of dragons; those associated with human royalty, and those associated with bodies of water. In general Kirins are the lords of all beasts, they don't deal with human affairs much.

Jang Shi are suppose to have stiff joints so they can't bend their knees much. Compensated in popular mythology with super-strength.
This also makes them hard to turn corners, and made Chinese architecture favour curved walkways.

ZUN made the point that Jang Shi has been mutating culturally to resemble western zombies and vampires. So even though Jang Shi isn't suppose to be a zombie, Miyako is turning into one.

Her clothes are green and her hair is red, which is a common color scheme for a Chinese dragon. The star on her hat says "dragon".
