BTW I am on the 3rd part of Higanbana. And IMHO it is a novel of quite different style. It looks more like Stephen King's works. No umineko's mindfuk. Quite interesting reading.

Now, my favorite character is Marie. Despite anal rape and death in toilet she chose paladin class and kicked Higanbana's ass in second part.

Hmmm… I can't really speak too much about this translation project just yet, but a bit of organisation needs to be done. Once everything's sorted out, the project should be able to move along faster.

Arc 3: Midori is the princess of the class and star of the drama club. Boys idolize her and girls want to be like her. There's only one gloomy girl that always gets bullied and constantly glares at Midori.
Midori has a special ability: she can see youkai named "Tea Gentleman". Once she was a bullied gloomy kid too but for a "sliver of her soul" she made her wish come true. She got a leading role in one of the drama club plays, performed perfectly and got recognized as "princess" since then.
Buuut, here's the catch: at school she randomly feels sharp pain from time to time. Tea Gentleman just tells her: "don't mind".
There's a "big, complex, masterwork" play called 'Rokkenjima' that drama club finally decides to perform. Leading role of the witch goes to Midori and she works hard for it everyday. Pain frequency increases (she also doesn't want to go to doctor since she might get hospitalized. I'd go but that's her call), Tea gentleman is all "don't mind, don't mind". Once in the club room when she changed clothes she finally notices: her body is covered in bruises, fresh and old, small and big. "don't mind".
She's close to mind-break but here's our white knight Marie. She tells Tea Gentleman to leave Midori alone.
Tea Gentleman: "Fuck off"
Marie: "Fuck you, YOUKAI BATTLE TIME"
Kicks his ass throughly. After the devastating blow Marie delivered his illusions shatter. Midori finally realizes that she's the bullied kid that always gets hit for any reason, she can't act at all and that gloomy girl is actually the princess of the class and the drama club. She remembers her true wish: "I want to be that girl".
Turns out Tea Gentleman can grant a suffering person an illusionary world where she's happy. Otherwise she'd probably committed suicide long ago. Marie doesn't know what to do. Higanbana tells her to leave them alone. She does. Midori continues to live in her perfect world with occasional pain at school.

Act 4: A girl from the class gets hospitalized. Rumor goes that chair fell down and destroyed her eyeball. Girl named Michiru comes up to a group of girls discussing the incident and tells them it's the local diety's curse. They tell her to go die somewhere. Later one of the girls comes up to her and asks if it's true and what should be done in order to lift the curse. Turns out, she and a group of girls broke the local guardian diety's shrine accidently. Michiru tells her that all of them should come and apologize as a group.
Meanwhile, Marie investigates if the curse is true or not. Turns out, local guardian (and patron of dead animals' souls) is Sakunoshin, a completely harmless spirit.
Meanwhile, one of the girls' group members still refuses to come and apologize. Turns out she's afraid as fuck but just acts tough. Michiru tries to drop down a fire extuingisher on her from the upper floor but Marie stops her. She asks Michiru why she did this.
Well, here goes your usual story: "I can see ghosts and spirits but noone would believe me so I tried to scare them with that curse"
Marie: "Don't do this anymore"
Michiru: "ok"
Later it turns out that fallen chair just scratched the girl, her eyes are fine and she was hospitalized with your generic stomach disease.

Arc 5:
A shocking incident: someone killed many rabbits kept at school. In a very gruesome ways, mutilating, beating, tearing off limbs and ears, etc. Let's get back in time a little.
Hikaru is ANOTHER bullied kid of the story and a representative of 'rabbits feeding commitee'. Rabbits are the only good thing for him at school. After the day of bullying he comes there to let the steam off and tortures them in special ways so nobody could notice any injuries.
One day a youkai named Hamerun approaches him and asks him for help in creating his own school legend called "Hamerun of the music room", "Castanettes of Hamerun". In exchange he'll deal with the bullies and people Hikaru doesn't like. Ok.
One day after school Hikaru lures (by throwing rabbit feces at and running awa) a group of four bullies in the music room. When in music room, Hamerun can turn people into rabbits and so he does. Hikaru kills all of them while they are in their rabbit forms.
School's in an uproar, 4 students missing plus massacre of the rabbits.
One day Hikaru gets called to teachers' room and is told that "he's unfriendly, isolated, etc" and should "make up with everyone". Well, obviously gets mad and decides to kill his teacher.
While he and Hamerun prepare the stage, Higanbana appears. She tells Hamerun that he's making too much noise for a newbie youkai and is troubling the others. Hamerun thinks "why not take the 3rd seat from her now?"
YOUKAI BATTLE
R.I.P., Hamerun. Higanbana doesn't want to devour Hikaru since his soul probably tastes terrible and uses Hamerun's Castanettes to turn him into the rabbit (forever) and puts him with remaining rabbits. She explains that rabbits have high sexual tension and always get excited to see a new buddy. Also, homosexuality isn't unusual for them.
Rabbits menacingly approach Hikaru while breathing hard...

Here's a wall of text of my opinion on Higanbana so far. I first wanted to post it in the VN general thread, but this thread is actually half-decent and more related, so here I go.

It's much less similar to Higurashi or Umineko than one might expect, particularly because it's all about the journey, not about the destination. One might argue that it's just the same with Umineko, but too many people read it just to know who the damn culprit is. In Higanbana, you may probably switch some episodes around, which means that there is almost no build-up to some catastrophic (and/or glorious) crash. Thanks to that, you can disregard any foreshadowing and simply enjoy your ghost stories.

As a result, R07 is much less prone to stunning you with walls of text. Even when new characters are introduced, it goes something like this: "This is Kanamori-sensei. He abuses Marie because his job is a bitch. The end". It may seem like that it's not enough, but the only characters that need more development are the youkai, and they get it by starring in more than one story. A curious side-effect of this is that the manga seems to be better than the VN so far: it doesn't lose any narration (it's not like there was much to lose) and even gets some scenes that are not in the VN. The scene under the spoiler, for example, is reduced to a couple of lines in the VN. Of course, since the manga only covers about two stories so far, I don't have too much material to compare, so they may become more similar to each other now that the VN is out.

Of course, the main selling point of the sound novel should be the music, but I have yet to hear the track that sells the OST to me. I like フルキアシキ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnYv49EALzY)) and 学校案内人 (the track with the school chime in the background), they really fit the story, but I believe that the best tracks are still waiting in the later chapters.

Not so strictly. Yokais can even create some sort of alliances. For example because Kouchou-sensei is weak in man hunting, other yokais feed him with souls. In exchange Kouchou-sensei deletes all the information about yokais' victims from the world to prevent an intervention of police.

1) Why didn't Principal just erase the existence of 4 kids Hikaru murdered? I remember him being the most concerned about 'not raising ruckus at school'.
2) Why do youkais complain about their 'homes' (such as toilet or infirmary) if they can travel all over the school and town? Why not just settle elsewhere?

About the 2nd, i suppose their powers are more effective in their "homes", like Higanbana lures people to the infirmary, or all the Hamerun arc.
Also, Marie and supposedly Higanbana died when were humans in their respective "homes", and their myth are known in that place. Therefore, they must keep going full poltergeist in that place for not end forgotten or mistaken by a new youkai.

1. Kouchou-sensei deletes information, if yokais were involved. The fact what he ate Yooko's soul is just coincidence according Higanbana (or yokais from shadow provocated that incident). I still didn't read a the Hikaru's chapter, but if he killed according his own will, then Kouchou-sensei had no need to delete something.
2. Marie told what yokais can travel freely, but outside the school they are losing their power quickly. Possibly place of death is some sort of energy source for yokai.

Some thoughts:

Chapter about Midori is really great. She is extremely pitty person and I don't think what she will survive. Marie became a real paladine bully ("If you don't listen me, when I kick you out of our beloved fuken school"). There are some hints what she is stronger than other yokais. Great charcter! At this moment I have no regrets about reading this novel.

Well, in many folktales people become youkai out of their zeal, perhaps she's stronger because she's in cleave and smite mode all the time whereas the other school youkai don't really give a shit about much.

I'll tell you a "secret" about Witch Hunt.
You know why they never update their work and why they keep saying "no news = good news" yadda yadda?

That's because they have nothing to update. Whenever in the past it happened that they didn't make any update in several months it was because they didn't make any progress at all.

That's how they actually work. They do absolutely nothing for months and then when they see the "deadline" is coming they rush like crazy and do anything in like one month or less.
