When Portugal and other countries started to commerce with Japan, they also brought missionaries. During the short while they were there, they managed to convert a very largegroup of peasants. However, the shoguns of the time saw this as a serious threat to their power, since some particularly fierce peasant revolts were also ones with japanese christian. Of course, shoguns would have none of that and kicked and/or killed all the missionaries and forbade christianity, along with any outsider. However, some underground groups survived and thrived.

And thus Japan managed to stay in the Feudal era for a while longer.

Silly people. Everybody knows that if you want to weaken a religion you tolerate it. If you want to make it stronger you make martyrs out of them.

Then again, Byakuren and her flunkies are all unholy beasts under the guise of holiness. Byakuren herself is a black magic practitioner. I doubt they can handle those weapons without receiving damage themselves.

Nice touch using Kanako's picture as if she was any better than Byakuren. Starting up a war for her own survival seems more despicable than what Byakuren did. Seeing as how her mountain is full of nothing but hungry yokai, she is bound to disappear due to lack of faith. She wont be missed.

Lady Kanako did not start a war, heathen. She merely gave a 2 week warning to submit the all but abandoned shrine for some unknown deity that has not deigned to make itself apparent to a shrine maiden who did not care about the faith of her own God/Goddess. It was merely absorption into her own faith.

Meanwhile, Byakuren consorted with dark powers to retain her youth and avoid death, even going as far as betraying her own race. She was sent to Makai for a reason, not merely because Shinki-sama is a lovely lady.

It is canon. Go read the extra materials. Murasa was saved by Byakuren, but if word was known that Byakuren actively helped Youkai (who ate humans), things could have gotten ugly, and fast, for her.

Thus she murdered her companions.

When her little secrets were found out, she was hunted down and sent to Makai. Which was the proper thing to do since she got fired from Humanity.

And now, thanks to this tolerance policy in Gensokyo, she now has a temple way too close to the Human Town. This is way too fishy, if you ask me.

Doing one's best to eke out a day-to-day existence is what makes humanity beautiful. Is Kanako in the wrong for working to improve both herself and those around her, even if it's for her own sake? Especially when compared to Byakuren, who condemned people to horrific fates (ie. you don't die when you're drowned by a funayurei, you stay as another shipwreck ghost forever. Actually, you probably get to be a little girl too so I guess it's not so bad a fate.) to do the same?

If Christianity really made it into Japan, japanese culture

It's actually a serious matter, Ishihara, the one you take so lightly and make fun of, thinking it won't affect your issues, has made many declarations on how Japan needs Christian morals and how the earthquake was a divine punishment, apart from all the ''otaku and homosexuals have defective DNA'', his speech actually affected Comiket itself, very lightly, but it's a start, if this goes on there won't be any more comiket in a few years.

No. Japanese are NOT atheists. Atheists FIRMLY believe that no higher power exists and do their best to deny such existence. Japanese don't think that way. They couldn't care less either way because they don't have the power to prove it one way or the other, but they have been raised to believe in spirits and the afterlife as per their customs. That's why they're a superstitious bunch.

I think that's strange. I believe you, it's certainly not impossible to dismiss the idea of divine power while permitting other silliness in your universe, but it is unusual. I guess you might find belief in magic and ghosts and paranormal in the "angry teen rebel" type of atheist. As a more typical no-nonsense naturalist humanist atheist I find "superstitious atheists" pretty silly, but I guess it does support the notion that a lot of people need some kind of supernatural crutch to function well. The mind still holds more mysteries than any other part of the human body, after all.
