UBW is a good story but it's hard to stand up to Fate.

Fate has a more depressing tone to it, it's where you meet the characters first, it has the introduction to everything, so when you're playing through UBW a lot of it is already familiar and doesn't have the new feeling to it until certain scenes. Fate focuses a lot on Saber where as UBW is obviously more about Shiro/Rin. If you could somehow manage to play UBW before Fate I’d be there’d be a change in people’s minds.

If you're a fan of Rin then UBW definitely has a special spot for you and it'd be better than Fate to you.

Again part of the problem is that you experienced Rin once in Fate. You've seen most of her depth: she's a tsundere. There you go. So playing again but with her as the main focus you're going to just be getting a lot more tsundere and not much surprise. The selling point is she's the main love interest so you get more time, more scenes, and a love scene towards the end. You can't expect them to radically change her character because she is in fact more or less an archetype.

I'm a tsundere fan myself so being given more chances to mess with her and to get her blush was more heaven than hell to me. But there was more depth to her and a few nice scenes to go along with it.

Arc -> Ciel -> Akiha -> Hisui -> Kohaku is the recommended route order. There's no reason to switch it up. Some people dislike doing Ciel after Arc because of early repetition and, well, it's Ciel. But her route is good. For a Near route, I mean. Beats the shit out of Arc's, anyway. So yeah, do it that way.

You have to do Arc or Ciel('near side') to unlock Akiha/Hisui/Kohaku('far side'), you have to do Hisui to unlock Kohaku. Kohaku is designed to be done last.

Beyond that, there's no importance to order, though being the 'main' heroine Arc's is perhaps the route you should do first.

I went Ciel->Hisui->Arc->Akiha->Kohaku. I think the general pattern of near->far->near->far->Kohaku isn't a bad way to go overall.

I think the large amount of repetition in the first half is a good reason to not do both near side routes one after the other. There's a bit of that in Hisui/Kohaku's first third too, but it's not nearly as bad.

Surprised no one mentioned this but UBW really fleshes out a lot of the supporting cast/antagonists' motivations and mindset, which answers questions as to why things might have happened in fate but also provides a contrast between Shirou's ideal of heroism and the realities (Caster's story in particular has some similarities to both Shirou/Archer)

Arcueid comes first no matter what. It is required that you beat it before you do any other route. Her route pretty much sets up the entire story, it being Nasuverse Vampires 101. A very good beginning all around. Delicious vampire moe~.

Ciel or Hisui next. Ciel is an unattractive character whose route is awesome because of things that don't have much to do with her. Her route is extremely similar to Arc's, has just as epic fight scenes and has Arc still loving you to somewhat relieve your disgust of having to deal with Ciel. Hisui is an attractive character whose route is unfortunately boring because of things that don't have much to do with her. Lots and lots of drama, has just as much to do with Kohaku as Hisui and a single fight with SHIKI that feels lukewarm compared to every other battle. Hisui's route is, in the end, basically just setting up for Kohaku's.

After going through both of them you've got two great options, Akiha and Kohaku. Both are amazing routes that are just heart-wrenching. Akiha's route contains immense ;_;, sort-of incest with Tsundere imouto and the most epic battle in the game with Roa/SHIKI ("If this voice in my head gets a little clearer..."). Kohaku's route is short and parallels Hisui's route, but is still amazingly awesome. It is supposed to be the last route you play, tying everything together neatly and ending on a happy note, but I say you could go for either of these last and still feel that the VN finished brilliantly.
