Where do I get started with this whole Tohou business? Is there a game or doujinshi I should start with first? There seems to be so many games and so much fandom I'm lost as to where I should start.

Embodiment of Scarlet Devil if you want to start chronologically first, Imperishable night or Ten Desires (soon to come) are good easier games but not recommended as you'll get stuck only 1cc-ing them.

as for doujin, start with the official works first, Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Strange and Bright Nature Deity, etc.

Download games 6-12 (including the ones with decimals), if you've never played a STG game before then start with Imperishable Night, then quickly move over to PCB or SA and train until your eyes get sore and become a dodging machine.

As for the fandom, avoid it at all costs, checking the fanart at pixiv/danbooru is what you should do.
