Basically, if you're going to write a 'deep' story, make sure the writing is good. 'Serious' Touhou doujins always reek of angsty teenager.

>> No.7646961

By the way, I have nothing against a serious storyline, in fact I welcome it. But it is annoying to read when you can tell the author feels his writing is on the same level as that of acclaimed literature.

Why would you give a shit about that? If his work is good, his work is good, and if it's not, it's not. Even if the work had any literary merit to begin with it probably gets lost when translated by people who are bad at Japanese begin with, so you can't tell after it comes out to the other side.

nah, I'm genuinely curious. I'm not the biggest fan of Love and Peace. I just laugh at the mere usage of the word "pretentious". Reminds me of some sommer /a/.

I know the word is loaded nowadays, but it's not without merit. And Eva is pretentious shit, come on. That's its selling point.

>> No.7647015

I've noticed that people who use "pretentious" as an insult tend to be anti-intellectual, using "pretentious" when they really mean "intellectual."

I'm not sure what's worse--people who think anything intellectual is bad (almost anyone who calls almost anything pretentious) or people who think anything beyond their comprehension (even if this is because it's incomprehensible) is intellectual and therefore A++ material (see: fans of Evangelion and Xenogears).

>> No.7647053

No, I've just seen plenty of fuckwits (like you) using it as such while people who can properly use the word tend to use more specific terms (such as incomprehensible) instead of just calling something pretentious.

No, I saw that someone had used the word and then refused to explain why they had used it. That is near-100% reliable evidence that said someone is anti-intellectual.

That's an interesting way of putting it. Personally, I've just started putting pretentious in the "words that have long since lost their meaning" bin, alongside hipster and weeaboo. But here you've gone and derived some meaning from the word's usage. You're quite perceptive, Anon

>> No.7649319

>>7647343
I agree with hipster, but I don't see how weeaboo has lost its meaning at all.

>>7647091
I am not articulate enough to explain why it is pretentious, I can only say that it is so. Just like I can tell something is unfunny, when I cannot explain to you what exactly makes it unfunny. But trust me, we can tell. If you're reading something and you get that "yyyyyeaaahhh, okay" vibe from it, it's a good contender for the pretentious title.
