It'll be harder to stand behind Aya being judgement so I'll just hold off on that for now but as for yamada: for one, I can't think of anybody else to be in place of Justice; for two, Justice represents impartiality & responsibility which I feel are her most predominant traits; for three, I can't think of anybody more qualified to represent justice.

Justice can be given to either Reimu for her heroine, treat-everyone the same status (says so the books) or Byakuren, although she's more on the youkai side of things and could have been dangerous should she not have been beaten up after being unsealed.

Fool should be Reimu, no questions about it - she's the protagonist, Fool is the quintessential protagonist card. Genji should be warning her instead of the dog. Yuyuko is a much better High Priestess than Sanae, but with Reimu as the Fool, you have the main characters as the first three cards, which is nice. Youmu is nice for Chariot, what's Nue doing there? Saigyou Ayakashi is a good Devil, Shinki fits too though I guess. Koishi or Satori is a good Hanged Man, Hina doesn't make as much sense since Hanged Man is about seeing the world in a different manner.

These cards represent more about how Touhous fit the word (or at least not go too far from the actual Tarot meaning) rather than the status, Cirno should stay.

well it's a mixture of both - I'd like to have a playful mixture of the esoteric (actually meanings) with the whimsical (fandom/superficiality) interpretations but overall I would lean more towards the esoterics.

Addendum: The more I think about it, the more it makes sense for World to be a generic flower-carrying fairy or a tea party with all the Stage 6 bosses. World represents wholeness and satisfaction, it is the card for when all is said and done; for when an incident ends and the stage is ready to be set for the next one - the staff roll of Tarot, if you will. A generic fairy carrying two flowers (reflecting the staves carried by the angel in the original art) flying above the Hakurei Shrine or Reimu having tea with various final bosses nicely represents that "ending" feel.

Are you doing this associating a card with a character just because character traits (like, Sakuya as the World because za warudo) or according to each arcana's meaning?

Following the meaning, (based on Jodorowsky-Marianne Costa restored Tarot of Marseilles, which is the one I'm used to) I'd say:

Exactly, that's why I stand behind Sakuya as the world, there are a shitload of nuances to extract behind the meaning.

I love the choices for Suwako, Kanako and most of all Sanae as the chariot! It's also nice seeing there being mutual feelings for Remilia and Yamada -- those are two choices which are probably considered controversial. I'm also serious consdiering Yuyuko for death because Komachi really is a minor character. The only two choices there that I strongly disagree with are Patchouli and Reimu although I do understand the reasoning behind them.

I chose Reimu as a Hierophant for her aspect as being the link between the gods and supernatural, and normal humans.
The enlightened human who mediates between the gods and the people.

But yeah, Keine would work even better because she also has the whole teacher aspect, in addition to her duality.
Hell, her duality reminds me of the similarity between the Hierophant arcana and the Devil arcana, she really works very good as a Hierophant.


As for Patchouli, it's between the Magician and the High Priestess.
Magician because she is the very embodiment of the initiate who seeks knowledge. Also, her elemental and sun/moon spells.

But I think she works better as a High Priestess, because the meaning of that arcana is the acummulation of knowledge, preparation, care, preservation without actually doing anything active. An egg.
Also her weakness, her library job...
She lacks the Magician's intent to use his knowledge in a practical way.
I think she's a very good High Priestess.

Akyuu is surrounded by death. Her life's work is the chronicling of the lives and death of those in Gensokyo, her 'life' is composed of dying and being reborn as the next Hieda, her lifespan in each incarnation is short and getting shorter, and she's physically frail. The ongoing shortening of her reincarnations' lifespan is a constant reminder of how she's coming closer and closer to her absolute death.

Intercard associations team Death with The Emperor's Keine (a fellow scholar).

I saw it as the Apollonian "Moderation in everything, even moderation." Having just enough beer so you can drive home afterwards, doing just enough work so you don't get fired, or being just honest enough to avoid being called a liar. A blending of opposites; indulging oneself while expressing prudence.

Betwixtness is another aspect that Komachi holds, being between the afterlife and reality.

Intercard associations team Temperance with Justice's Reimu (another intermediary with a money fetish), Yuugi's Strength (both titty monsters with an easygoing attitude), and Heirophant's Eirin (both titty monsters and death-dealers) or Byakuren (both titty monsters in servitude to a 'higher ideal').

>Yuuka as The Devil?
The Devil is about vice, egoism, passion, instinct, sexuality, and any other number of sins. Battling The Devil gives strength, and Yuka's notable adversary is Marisa, carrying The Magician's personal power and determination. Sexuality should be obvious enough with ZUN's "youkai moe" comment, egoism is a defining part of her existence, cruelty could be taken from the sadism she's usually attributed with.

Intercard associations team The Devil with The Lovers' Tenshi (S&M).

I was over at /bun/ about two years back and felt the need to do something for a tarot thread they were running. Spent several hours looking up tarot information and musing over interrelations and making connections, then made a post with this exact picture. Everybody loved it, but I didn't have the foresight to write down my connections anywhere else, and when the thread was lost to some spam I lost that original list. For a week or two thereafter I spent time rebuilding it based on what I remembered and what I could re-deduce. Still haven't found a copy of the text I made then, as their archiver didn't catch it.
