New People, the organizers of the J-Pop Summit Festival, is collaborating with Piapro.jp on a character design contest for Hatsune Miku U.S. Version. Artists can submit their interpretations of the virtual idol character that KEI created to personify Crypton Future Media's vocal music synthesis software. The grand prize winner will receive a round trip ticket to San Francisco from Crypton Future Media (or a "special prize" if he or she already lives in San Francisco).

Why are people giving her American themed clothing? Just because it takes place in San Francisco doesn't mean you have to bastardize her clothes design down to the level of the local culture.
Just keep changes in the visual stylization or something for christ's sake.

Someone has to draw an extremely fat, bacon wrapped hotdog eating american "pride" miku. I would but I physically can't draw. My right hand has this perpetual shaking. As for the outfit I think just draw whatever you think a teenage girl would be wearing in these situations. That way it's more natural and stuff.

The perceived purpose appears to be to make her full of American spirit, not just to make her look like a normal American/normal girl that would appeal to Americans.

I don't know, Americans don't usually go for cute over sexy, and that's what most Miku designs aim for.
Miku is cuteness, so either you have to completely revolutionize the character with god knows what terrible results or you keep the cuteness but it's not going to be that different from all the silly alternative costumes, it's not going to attract the casual crowd any more than that.

Ok guys, I just started on the sketch! Do you like it so far? Anything I should add/change/remove?~ Something seems a bit... off to me, but I can't quite put my finger on just what is it. This is kind of frustrating!
What should the background be? I was thinking a park, but that sounds too plain. (Also the things Miku is sitting on are stairs and the pillar things in the background are skyscrapers if you couldn't tell, heheh.)

American cartoons usually.. don't have seafoam green hair, as far as I know. Miku pretty much embodies everything foreign and unnerving to Americans about modern Japan, and so it's maximum culture shock to Joe Shmoe on the street. Culture shock is exactly what you're trying to dampen if you're doing an Americanized Miky.

Then again I'm of the opinion that it was a very bad idea from the start for Toyota to do this so whatever. I think they should have been way, way more subtle about it, to the point you almost wouldn't even know unless you'd heard of Vocaloid already. I'd think that subliminal, slow transition would be the best way for Japanese things to take root in the U.S, that's why anime that got aired in the U.S were filtered through the lens of Western tastes first. What Toyota's doing is the equivalent of if Toonami airing Lucky Star. Way too blatant of disregard for their audience (the generic public). However I'm just winding up my panties at this point, it's just a little online spot and not actually airing.

"Hatsune Miku U.S. Version" can only mean two things.

1. Japanese Americanization of Miku (American flags, cowboy hat, tank-top shirt)
2. non-weeaboo's (or anyone's who's never heard of Miku) interpretation of Miku.

It seems like the first Miku on Toyota's website was following option 2. And we all know how that went.

Option 1 is just as bad, if not worse.

Let's consider a reverse situation, though.

Powerpuff Girls, as shown in America, was fairly popular in Japan without any changes. They went and made a Japanese version later. I think that's what they're trying to do here.

Perhaps they would be better served by hiring an artist with a style that's already popular. Whoever they hired to do the first Miku on Toyota's website was clearly not in touch with popular American animation.

I wanted to enter, and spent some time thinking about how I wanted her to look, but then I saw the entry in OP's pic and felt extremely discouraged. A lot of the same things I was thinking are present in it, like star-shaped hairties and denim versus that latex-like material she usually wears. I would have gone with short shorts, and the sleeves are kind of gaudy, but I really like that design a lot.

I still want to give it a shot, but my best idea was pretty similar to OP, and I'm not sure how to alter it enough to be different without creating a color/costume catastrophe. The American flag is unsightly as a motif, really.
