I've been devoting idle time to pacifying UFO Stage 4 on Lunatic to level up my dodging ability. Pic related, they're the main problem areas. If I do well on some, I'll mess up the other. Garbage near the end of the stage is too fast-paced for my eyes if a dense clump comes my way. Sinking Vortex is tough because it gets harder as you time it out, but not too bad. The problem is that ZUN has some silly way of clearing bullets after an attack that causes some bullets to linger and fill in the holes in the last noncard which is already tough. Finally, the second to last card likes to make things very inconvenient if two anchors land too close to each other.

One day.

Hell, even the bullets look the same, and they're simple shapes, you could easily make something with a different design in minutes in photoshop or even gimp.

I mean, the game barely needs any animation, and they have an artist anyways. Why could they not have made it look like a different interface?

Heh, I'm (slowly) working on a freeware game from scratch in C, still constructing the underlying code to handle different bullet/laser behaviors. Even with the early placeholder graphics, it's obvious that it's heavily inspired by Touhou. The mechanics and such will be very different, but I can't deny that Touhou has had heavy influence on it. I would love to make the bullet graphics stylistically different from the games I've played, taking only the parts about them I like. Maybe I've just gotten too used to it, but round, high contrast bullets with a simple colored edge for variety are the easiest for me to see, so it's what I plan on sticking with for the most part.

Hopefully I don't receive the wrath of hoards of internet secondaries for making a Touhou ripoff.

I really need some ideas myself. I'm also working on my own shmup, obviously influenced by Touhou. I'm using spaceships (because I have a horrible imagination), and making my own shitty simple art for the characters and bullets. But at least it's mine.

It's really obvious to most people I'm trying to make a Touhou-like game, and I'm fine with that. I keep delaying work on it so I can think up gimmicks to keep it fresh each stage and at least somewhat different. Things like asteroids that break up into smaller pieces, bullets that deflect your bullets back at you, bumpers with huge hitboxes, magnetism, powerups, things like that.

I guess I just haven't played enough shmups yet to get good enough ideas. So I'm taking my time.

I recommend PCB not only because the mechanics are simple, but because the Easy is actually pretty tough later in the game. For me, the other games are so sparse that you don't properly learn to see the spaces between bullets instead of the bullets themselves.

There's a way you're supposed to move. You move in response to where the "trains" are coming from. If you get down next to where one is coming up from the bottom, all its crap will miss you, and so will most of the crap from the train on the other side.

Wait for the red bullets, move to the right, etc. If you follow the movement, you'll pretty much never run into any of the blue amulets. I started with EoSD. And I 1cced that first I believe. It seems to have given me a decent groundwork for touhou playing skills.

EoSD is very barebones compared to every other game in terms of mechanics. Not having an enemy indicator, visible hitbox, or scoring gimmick. It's fairly good for improving base danmakuing skills such as keeping an eye on the rest of the screen, learning to use your bombs before you die, as well as getting a natural feel for your hitbox.

For some reason I never ended up liking PCB. It's the touhou I like least honestly. I always feel off when playing it, but I use the vsync patch so I don't think it's input lag. Don't know what it is. I feel fine with every other touhou besides it for some reason.

Another thing I would also recommend the photography games. Shoot the Bullet is numbingly tough to new players, but it really felt like my skill improved when I had gotten through the whole thing. Don't let its difficulty discourage you.

PCB is great because you can get a billion lives like in the similar games, AND you can get extra free cherry point shields that can work like bullet clearing bombs/death bombs. If you use all your lives and bombs and shields properly, you should be able to clear it even making lots of errors.

You're probably giving up. It's like a fighting game when you have a low health bar and the other guy is almost full. You think "im at a disadvantage" "im as good as dead" you have to stop thinking that way.
Your amount of health (in this case, lives) doesn't determine how well you do, it only determines how many mistakes you're allowed to make.

It's not that I don't keep going on. I've had unexpected 1ccs by not giving up. But dying so very early is just no good. It means I need to do even better later on, and usually I tend to play even riskier and end up dying because I absolutely needed to risk something in order to go on rather than having that nice extra opportunity that I would in an optimal run. It happens in a lot of other games as well.

There's your problem. Not every run needs to be optimal. I've had plenty of fun hitting the game over screen on stage 2. Just keep practicing, consistency will come eventually.

I don't mind if it's close enough to optimal. I just don't want it to be making it to stage 6 one time, then stage 2 in another. Yeah, I have almost zero problem with bullet thumbing in ESPGaluda II and Resurrection, the only place I can think of ever is that part in stage 5 where you've got to move between the top-and-bottom spinny laser platforms with the bullets coming up from the bottom, since pretty much all other bullets come from higher up on the screen and your thumb is lower. The slightly reduced screen size helps way more than you'd expect, I have a fair bit more problem with rRootage since the screen is fullsize.
The problem with horis is that bullets can come from either side, and the reduced screen size isn't nearly enough to fit your full thumb in. Maybe I should do like they suggest and just use a finger since it's a bit smaller.

>>7594667
Main thing for me is the control skipping, I hardly ever need to slow them.

Some protips:

Rosa is the easiest to clear the game with. Follett is very good as well, but you need to use her option effectively, which can be difficult for beginners.

The tree boss in the forest has two safe spots (including one for his final attack - very useful), and you can easily avoid his apple attack by being at the bottom of the screen when he starts it, and flying to the top, or vice versa. The apples go under/over you and you don't have to dodge shit.

The dragon boss in the volcano also has a safespot on his final attack. Before he summons the wall of rocks, get next to his feet on the other side of them. You can just stand there and kill him without dodging anything.

Don't bomb Jitterbug. If you beat him without bombing, you get a cake that refills two bars of health. The lock-shot is very useful against him as well.

Don't go into the volcano stage unless you have 1000 counter. You can milk the rock spawns for tens of millions of points if you're playing on rank 3. You can also use the bomb+lock-shot technique to get an instant refill of your meter when exiting power up mode, but that's an advanced technique that will take practice to master. It works on most stages though and it's vital for scoring well.

A good route if you're playing purely for survival: B1 > C2 > C1 > A2 (rank 3) > A1 (rank 3) > B2 (rank 2). That way you'll get 4 health pick ups before going into the final stage. Just make sure you play at least two stages on rank 1 or 2 so you don't trigger suicide bullets.

Also, download replays.

Some enemies drop more crowns when you kill them with the lock-shot. The green eyes, vine snakes, and the large floating islands in the forest, for example. And it's good for enemies that move all over the place, like Jitterbug and Tyrannosatan.

And you can use to do recharges when exiting power up mode. An easy place to try this on are those vine snakes before the forest boss. Wait until your counter is fairly low (150 or so IIRC), hit the bomb and hold lock-shot. The screen will get filled with gold crowns and you'll be back up to 1000 instantly.

What! Why would you ever do such a thing?

Crank 'em up to 255, aww yea.

Well okay I have it on 180. They don't really obstruct your vision when you get used to them though.

It's not the stars that are the problem actually. I'd still have problems even if they weren't flying everywhere.

What did I do wrong? Can anyone give me advice?

If I only had one or two extra lives, I know that I would have passed. I want to try again.

The entirety of Stage 5. Go into practice mode and grind the shit out of it until you know a safe route through the stage and gain a little confidence against Nazrin and Shou.

A little replay to give you an idea of how to tackle the stage. You should only plan to bomb after Nazrin, if you want to simplify creating a red or green UFO, and the end stage garbage, since only SanaeB can reliably survive it on Hard and Lunatic.
