Does ZUN base touhou on old fairy tales or are the game plots mostly original?

ZUN is not high level enough to come up with his own youkai, that honor is exclusively for elder folklore researchers like Mizuki Shigeru and Toriyama Sekien (the former is responsible for demon bamboo and the latter made half a dozen "youkai" who were just illustrated puns he thought to be funny.) All his characters are based on extant myths and many of plots spin off from classical tales (UFO from Shigisan Engi, IN from the Tale of the Bamboo Cutter.)
