The story starts with Carl Macek. Well, it starts before that, but he's the best example of butchery ever. In the early days, licensed shows were corruptions, poor copies of their original counterparts. In Macek's case, he raped a variety of different shows for the sake of Robotech. As time progressed, things got better-- never perfect, but better. Then, subtitled shows became more prevalent. The work was often better than the fansub counterparts, and they weren't copies of copies of copies. Time passed, and the industry grew. This eventually turned into a landslide resulting in the Anime Boom, a disaster to the fandom in general.
Now we have the Aftermath.

If that original seed never got planted, things would have never ended up here.
