The UBW Installer is a particle accelerator and hadron collider located at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland. Currently under construction, the Installer is scheduled to begin operation in May 2008. The Installer is expected to become the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. The Installer is being funded and built in collaboration with over two thousand physicists from thirty-four countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories. When activated, it is theorized that the Installer will produce the elusive Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and 'missing links' in the Standard Model of physics and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong force, and the weak force. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why the remaining force, gravitation, is so weak compared to the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized novel particles that might be produced, and for which searches are planned, include strangelets, micro black holes, magnetic monopoles and supersymmetric particles.

'Wait, what?' 'That... That's... That's not right!' 'That can't be right... what... what's with that?' I could only babble incomprehensible gibberish. 'Hey now, didn't I say it would be JUST like in a hentai? Are you surprised?'. She laughed. But not with the previous warmth and kindness. The laugter this time was more befitting of a hellspawned demon. If my previous reaction was overwhelming shock, this time it couldn't be put in words. As I was helpless, she rushed to me with unearthly speed, tearing away clothes as if wanting to break my body into pieces. I was hauled up and bent over the bed. I couldn't think, let alone move. I was helpless. 'Well then, let's begin the installation procedure.' I could only hear her voice, laughing with satisfaction. And then... 'AAAAAAAGH' 'GAAAH' 'AAAAAA' I screamed. A huge, hard object had been inserted in my colon without warning. The pain was extreme. Making matters worse, it immediately started moving, thrusting in and out as I screamed, time and time again. Between jolts of pain I could feel blood from my torn insides slowly seeping out. If anything, it did seem to act as lubricant, lessening the pain to an extent. As I stopped shouting, I could hear another voice, moaning and panting, louder and louder. And finally... 'A...ah I'm co...coming... aaaaah!'

>> No.75714

What followed next was beyond reason. An unlimited number of blades materialised, one by one, inside of me, making their way out, tearing my body to shreds in the process. And as that happened, it was flashing before my eyes. Not my life, that is, but UBW. I was feeling it with every fiber of my broken body. Archer's GAR, epic fights between servants, all had become a part of me. An experience beyond life and time. I was on the verge of death, but it didn't matter. I was happy. This was more than I could have ever hoped for, from my life. 'Installation succesfull. No errors have been reported.' her words, the last I'd ever hear, sounded in my ears. And at that point I understood what it all had been for. Months of testing, inhuman amounts of work, all to acheive that ultimate experience. With my last thread of counsciousness, I begged Message for forgiveness. I knew he wouldn't hear me, but I had to do it. I had finally understood the meaning behind Message's work, and I died content, knowing that even if I had lived on, there would never be anything that would remotely equal what I had just experienced. I was complete. That was the true meaning of UBW installation.

>> No.76830

Fuck you, Message.

Seriously, fuck you. I don't want to be able to run UBW on fucking toasters. I don't want a "beast of a thousand faces" that can upgrade, degrade, make marmelade and fetch my newspaper for me, either.

All I want is a simple program that extracts some .xp3 files to the relevant directory and overwrites them if need be. Testing things is fine, but two months to make an installer and bitching when people asks for updates?

Honestly, right now I'd settle for a .rar with the updated files that I could just copy to my game dir, perhaps with an informative readme.

>> No.76850

>>76830
I want a RAR. At least I could probably make that work with any fucked-up pirate copy instead of having to hunt down the original unedited ISOs like I did with Melty Blood. Man that was a lot of work; what right does mirrorMoon have to completely invalidate my hard-earned illegal games, jeez.

You basically said the same thing I said on /fate/ a while ago when I had it out with them over TakaJun.

A lot of my dislike for their team is irrational, but the sheer fact that he was going on eroge binges while we got little or no updates on the editting process of UBW instead of actually making sure his team was doing its job was rather frustrating.

I don't, however, blame TakaJun for Message's faggotry, and if what >>77203 said is true, then I have actually gained some respect for him.

Quite simply, Mirror Moon's handling of the UBW route as a whole has been terrible. The editting for the route should have started a bit after TakaJun started into translation so that the wait between the two finishing wouldn't be as long as it was.

The installer is proving stupid at this point, undoubtedly, but there were definitely some ridiculous errors in their process that occurred earlier that they really need to hammer out.

This is just dumb. Not telling anyone about the future or progress of the patches is just going to anger more people. What it really seems to be getting down to is that MirrorMoon is doing a poor job on the translation of UBW. I bet if any other group picked up this project they would've had a better leader, done editing during translation, had an installer before testing was even completed, and have a patch out in a orderly fashion along with progress reports to keep the fans up to date. This is not proffesionalism, it's the complete absence of. Most "Proffesional" companies release progress reports or at least news reports about current events going on in there compnay. And using the excuse that "we have other lives" is also just plain stupid. There are a lot of people willing to help out there, and if you "proffesionalism" is getting in the way of letting other people help you... then you don't deserve to do this project. I'm half assessed to pull a team of my freinds together to do the translation ourselves with all this stupid bullshit going on around a single freaking isntaller. Doing something for free is not a free pass for pats on the back.

I don't excuse free webcomics for being shitty, and I don't excuse groups who try to comport themselves as professionals for saying 'Don't expect us to act professionally except when it suits us'.

Mirror Moon is trying to act like a genuine group of professionals. Which is fine and admirable. But as a result, they have to be prepared to be judged at the same level that professionals are. Just because they're doing it for free doesn't excuse them from criticism, especially when they start acting so whiny because people want exaplanations for stupid shit like this installer business.

I do admit that TakaJun is very competent at translation speed. I can't speak about translating the h-scenes (although I don't think I have quite the disgust for them that he and Ryuusoul seem to), but he does very well with little issue.

My main problem is the fact that they didn't start editing until he was DONE. This meant that that particular leg of the process took an extra chunk of time. And because it's apparently impossible to design the installer without the edits being entirely complete, that added yet MORE time to the project.

I saw it, and in theory, sure, it works.

But that doesn't stop them from doing it with the same method that they have now, just without them having to wait until TakaJun is done with the whole route before starting.

TakaJun finishes, say, Day 4. Sends out a .txt or whatever format to the editors and moves on to Day 5. In the meanwhile, the editors go through, make suggestions, resubmit. If TakaJun is feeling like avoiding an h-scene for a bit, he can browse those files, make the suggested changes or explain why he won't, and they'll be on their way.

That process would, in all honesty, probably consume less overall time. It might add a bit of time to the translation process because he'd be going through the revisions, but ultimately we'd probably see a net increase in speed.

>> No.81290

We use a similar system when fansubbing. You have you mini editors take a look at the episode script, write prefered changes to a seperate txt file, and then the master editor looks at the changes and either implements them or not. The same process could've been used here... but instead they decided to wait till the entire translation was done.

Well UBW only took as long as it did because they lost an editor; the guy said he would edit and ended up sucking balls, then they put out that post asking for editors, then they retracted it and TakaJun did the editing himself, and if TakaJun is editing, TakaJun isn't translating.

The editing started when TJ FINISHED translating. There was no delay there.

I've already discussed my grievances with the editing team in posts in this topic earlier, so I won't go into that again.

So perhaps, in this one specific instance, you may be right. It may have compounded because of the fact that TakaJun wouldn't have been able to do both simultaneously.

But I'm speaking on terms of an overall model. This deadwood could have been rooted out before the editing effort really got underway and a replacement obtained fairly quickly, rather than the entire thing stalling temporarily because they didn't realize that the guy was gonna fag out on them.

I know I'm beginning to wonder if we should drop the nice guy act and just go apeshit and tear the forum to pieces. Then I remembered I actually wanted something to be done rather than get a deleted thread and a banned account/ip.

I can see that most of the people asking for an explanation are newbies, you guys should atleast do a bit of lurking before getting insecure about
the translation being abandoned.

I like how iclim4 bothers to read our posts and tries to decipher meaning from them. It shows that he cares.

The framework is the same, but there are a lot of game-specific functions and procedures. Especially Fate/stay night has a lot of extra stuff. And not extra fancy stuff, either. Basic stuff. Things an installer needs to be able to do. (Utawarerumono would also have had a lot of extra code if we had supported the CD version, for example.) NSIS is great for making simple installers, but in the end they will not work in a LOT of situations. To build an NSIS installer that WORKS, that is quite a lot more work than people think, especially if you're using it to do things that NSIS wasn't at all designed for.
I thought it was actually kind of funny when someone said about the Utawarerumono installer that "he didn't see anything special, it was just a plain installer." Without realizing it he was actually complimenting me on my work, because if everything goes right, the installer *should* act like a plain, normal one. The only difference being that under the hood it does some very unusual stuff.

And you have to realize that the installer scripts cash in on more than 100kB plaintext. Since NSIS is a scripting language (as opposed to a more low-level programming language), 100kB means a very complicated installer. For Fate/say night English v2.0, there are more than 2200 scriptlines. Since I am the only one in the group who has extensive knowledge of the NSIS language, a code review is not feasible. Thus we are stuck with long and extensive testing procedures (ArchDemon has been putting in some awesome work testing things on all kinds of platforms, give him a hug when you see him). Over the past few weeks we kept finding Vista-related problems, and right now we're having problems with transferring saves. But we're getting there.

The real problem here is that 2 or 3 OS will be made before the hf installer is out, forcing Message to start from the beginning.

Ok, I am happy with Message's uninformative response which told us that he's basically written about 10-33 kb of text per month.

attn bunny-poster. It's over. Let the thread die a peaceful death with saged bunnies, rather than bumping bunnies.
