Well, that's Persona 3. The third one, to be exact. There's Persona 3 on PS2, there's Persona 3 FES on PS2 which is the same game but with some minor add-ons and a bit of extra storyline after the final boss, and then there's Persona 3 Portable, which you're getting, which is point-and-click gameplay except in the dungeon.

There's four Persona games to date, Persona 4 being the latest and being the one this anime will be about. In my opinion a lot better than Persona 3 because the story is not so dark and angsty all the time, while still being about a serial murder investigation.

The first two Persona games are so different from 3 and 4 that they're hardly related.

Person 2 Innocent Sin (PSX/ PSP)
Persona 2 Eternal Punishment (only PSX currently)

Persona 3 (PS2/PSP)
Persona 4 (PS2)

Persona 3 reimagined the series which Persona 4 followed up on. It involves a life simulation part as well as an RPG styled dungeon crawler.

Persona 3/4 are in that sense very different from 1 and 2 and comes highly recommended to new comers to the series as it's much easier to get into and is also much easier to find in stores.

Play Persona 3 or/and 4 first and then go onto playing both parts of Persona 2. Just keep in mind that Persona 2 won't be anything like them, but instead you'll get a really great story and cast of characters.

Persona 1 isn't worht getting into, it just isn't interesting and many fans would agree with me on that point.

Persona 3 or 4, it's your pick. They're really innovative JRPGs.

If you only have a PSP then Persona 3 Portable it is.

It's the same, you just go to school, then hang out with different people to increase your social link level, then you go to the dungeon and fuse Personae to use in battle, which will be stronger the higher your social link level is.

Differences are that in P4 you can control your party in battle, while in P3 you can only control the main character and your party does retarded things. You will die a lot in P3 not because of how you're playing, but because your party members are extremely stupid.
Also, in P4 there are different dungeons to beat, while in P3 it's just one gigantic ass dungeon that slowly opens up more as the story progresses.
The games are very much the same, so you'll have to judge by characters and music, which in my opinion are better in P4. It's like they took P3, which is a great game in itself, and fixed everything wrong with it.
That said, if you play P4 first, you'll have a hard time not getting angry at your party members AI in P3.

The only thing that annoyed me about the AI in P3 was Mitsuru casting Marin Karin. Her offensive attacks like Bufu were avoidable by telling her to heal/support, but then she'd always cast that trucking useless skill Marin Karin.

I had to boot her off of my team for that. But she's still the best P3 girl, behind Chihiro.

It's supposed to make your enemy Charmed, which is a very good status effect. The move only has about 10% hit chance though, and it doesn't work on bosses but she still uses them. Really annoying when you're one hit away from dying (if the main character dies, it's game over) and you really need her to heal you, and instead she tries to fucking charm the boss.
You were thinking of getting the PSP version though, where you can control your party members, so it's not a problem for you.

I started with P3 actually. Then I played P4, which was better in every way. Then I played P1 on the PSP, which was an awful game. Then I played P2, which was good, but not as good as P3 or 4.

Demon negotiation is not a plus. It's a negative. I will never understand why people love the extremely repetitive and tedious dialogue minigames just to get a fodder demon for fusion. It's fun for maybe 10 minutes until the novelty wears off.

I think Persona 3 was more in line with P2, BUT they should have designed the slinks to be thematically more compatible with the main story, as well as made them more involving and deeper and not something that could be maxed out in one playthrough.

Also combat was watered down definitely, they need to fix it for the next Persona.

I played persona 1 a long time ago and I don't remember enemies in that game having any personality. They were just enemies. Like I said, I find the whole demon negotation thing retarded, which is where this "personality" comes from so I'm perfectly fine with it being stripped out of the game.

I like having to "grind" my courage, intelligence,etc. I like having to plan my week out for battling, studying and working. Actually, it's fun. And from what I've seen of P2's battle system, it's worse than Persona 1s. Having more to do in a jrpg battle system doesn't make it better. Valkyrie Profile is one of the most simple, and it's also one of the most fun. Slow tedious menu scrolling isn't fun.
