I said I'd make a thread when I'd be done with the level up stuff, so here. Also adjusted a lot of stuff in battle and character generation. Touhou stats can still differ the same amount from their base stats, but the average will always be the same.

I only changed your dodge chance when you choose evade because it was unbalanced with defend. And mostly only the lower limit has gotten higher (30% chance to evade), and the default chance, when evd=spd, is now 55%. Evading in other scenarios didn't change.

Level range areas, probably in ranges of 10. From the few matches I had agaisnt lvl 5s, it's still too hard to win against higher lvls, although it will be easier to fight a lvl 35 as a lvl 30 than a lvl 5 as a lvl 1.

Also, about levels. The xp you get goes up a lot when fighting higher players, and vice-versa. The amount of damage you take or give also affects a whole lot, so even if you only take half of a level 5's hp as a level 1 or 2, you'll actually get more xp than your opponent and will catch up levels quickly.

That has to deal with people creating commercial works. This is not a commercial work and therefore falls out of his jurisdiction. The only case that could be made is if it was infringing on potential profit that he could be made and then Zun could send a C&D, but that is obviously not the case.

This would be cool if there was any strategy involved. Are you going to let the players choose which stats to increase and so forth? If not, the whole game becomes a useless crapshoot.

I spent a long time playing an online game which was basically nothing but "which stat would you like to raise?" and even that was enough to induce rather complicated strategy, psychological mind games (I know he knows I will raise agility. Therefore he will raise accuracy so I will instead raise damage... But if he thinks I think that he would raise speed so the only way to not be exploited is to randomize my choise) and it was great fun.
Just seeing who rolls the highest with dice gets old in no time.

Characters like Aya are shit despite ridiculous speed because she has no mp and puts too much mp into her attacks. She has to defend so much that she'll end up failing evade rolls and taking damage.

Thats more of a problem with Aya's stat distribution than speed, but a lot of characters I tried had the same problem. I ended up sticking with my first account(Nazrin) just because she never runs out of mp and it gives you a lot more options than having to make obvious defense picks when your mp starts dropping. Her high speed just lets her drag out fights even further and win through blue bar attrition.

The leveling system broke the game entirely. There's no strategy involved if you started leveling later than the rest. You're a level 2 character, and you get matched up to level 7-level 12 characters. Whatever you do, you miss and your opponent hits. The only way to stand any chance is to grind losses until you're on a similar level.

This game needs choices that do not rely solely on RNG weighted with stats. Some options that, if you play well, can win you a game even against a stronger opponent. I don't mind if I lose when fucking up just once, as long as it's at least theoretically possible to win without pure luck.

To tell you the truth, is a game where you have to use your mind, and read your opponent's movements. Some people uses predefined patterns (i.e: dodge, shoot, dodge, shoot...). You have to read what's going to be his attack. If you guess it right, you will beat him easily, unless he has the highest level.

No, that's exactly why we should post about shit like this. The dev needs to know what is wrong with the game to fix the game. If it really is intended as a strategy game like >>7526501 described, the current leveling system is a serious step in the wrong direction. Rather than doing anything strategic, a leveling system that gives only stats only biases the 'luck' factor towards the person who played the most. This renders even ordinary strategies useless, as people have pointed out; none of the options mean anything if your opponent evades better and deals more damage regardless of what you choose.

Personally, I think level-based stats shouldn't be in a game like this anyways, unless there's a way to level outside of just losing fights over and over and you have a choice in what stats you increase, which would allow you to customize your character for strategic advantage.

Rather than that, people should gain more options, such as variations of existing choices. An example would be a 'counter' ability that develops from 'defend', which prevents less damage but reflects some of the damage you get that turn, or an 'absorb' ability that lets you take full damage but recovers your MP much more than a regular defend. Things like that give a player incentive to level up without making the game only 'best stats wins', while increasing the strategic depth.

Battle system needs a lot of work. Right now, it's not much deeper than rock paper scissors. A similar game, Kongai, lets you move between attack ranges and enables/disables moves depending on the range. And randomly being able to evade and attack is bullshit.

But I understand that it's just a school project, so whatever.

Dev here. As I said, I keep in mind all suggestions for the game. But be aware that the current state of the game is not what I have in mind at all. It's only this way now to test the battle and connection systems, etc. In actual areas, you cannot encounter players too apart from your levels, and have better chance of getting matched against the closest one, although I will make sure you won't battle the same guy every time. You will also not recover all of your hp after every battle, to make it so even the players at the max level of the area will have trouble keeping their ground and advancing in the area.

But I do want to make the game a lot more strategic than it is right now.

Tomorrow I will try a few things:
First of all, reduce server stress.
As someone suggested, I will try making evade only work against bullets. Will keep evade chance when attacking and shooting (vs bullets) but make it happen less even with high spd. I think some luck factor in places does make the game interesting.
For a while, will try removing ALL normal distributions of stats. This means you should do the same damage every time, if you have enough mp. But I mainly want to try if this puts too much stress.
Reduce stats given on level up. I think level ups will make it more interesting when the game is more complete, so I want to keep them.
For now I'll try to make a quick match making as soon as possible, something like looking only at waiting players 1 level range at first, and going up/down 1 level every 10 seconds or so.

Basically, you run around to determine the distance to your opponent, and while doing so your energy automatically charges. When you press the button, you start to attack your opponent, and you need to use one of your attacks. Attacks are divided in three types: Weapon, Technique and Kidou. When defending against an attack, you need to predict what attack your opponent picks and defend as such. Failure to pick the right one gives the attacker the chance to strike again, and each successive strike deals more damage (but the attacker can only attack for as long as he still has energy left). Before the game, you can pick which four attacks you'll use, and they vary in type, power, cost and range.

Defending is pretty good, actually. The damage it lowers seems to be pretty random though. I've blocked shit that would normally hit me for 50-60, and reduced it to 2-3 quite a few times. Then again, there are the times where it doesn't seem to reduce at all.
