Aw. Believe it or not, but I had finally actually successfully blocked that thing out of my mind.

If you think it's good, then you've clearly never played the game. It is a shit adaptation, and even beyond that, it looks like it was made by two interns in a cardboard box.

>> No.7499340

>>7499236
I actually watched 4 and a half episode of it. Not that you would care about this information.

But my final impression of it was that it did atmosphere great, but it lacked in suspense which is supposedly one of the VN's strong points, co-existance with the atmosphere.
With this in mind, I didn't want to spoil everything and ruin the suspense while getting overexposed to the atmosphere, prior to reading the VN. Hence why I stopped.

But yes, it was my impression that it seemed like an especially good adaptation. But still an adapation nonetheless. And these things, even if good, tend to be worse if they don't take wild liberties due to the problems involved in converting a work built for one medium into another, but while still doing the scenes the way they were written for the original medium.

But yeah yeah, opinions. My comment on the translation though, had little to do with this. I simply don't generally trust the anime fan-subbing scene, with either skill, nor notable dedication. No real offense if anyone felt particuarly hit, but from my own observations/experiences I would say people in these crowds tend to overestimate themselves, as well as attracting hordes of even less skilled, yet equal minded folks.

>good adaptation
I just want to add to the relativity of this statement. If it by any chance went by unnoticed, my general impression of adaptations aren't great. So good, doesn't necessarily mean good.
I still believe the adaptation failed (who could have guessed?) hence why I dropped it.

>> No.7499498

No one is born with experience. If you think you can do a better job, then you're welcome to start your own project for it. If you can't read moonrunes, then this project will probably be much better than a machine translation. If you can read moonrunes, then it shouldn't concern you in the least.

The types who can discern the difference between good and bad TLs or at least bad and really bad TLs probably avoid the predominantly underage, autistic, weeaboo circlejerks of BL communities. Not 'idiot', specifically, but it has comparatively few synonyms. (Note the 'comparatively'.)

Also, like I said, 'baka' is a standard insult. There's no 'reason' for its usage other than it being a very common word; translating it the same way every time is inexcusable since an English-speaking person wouldn't use 'idiot' in many of the situations 'baka' is used in.

>"Baka" has some very specific nuances and implications that aren't covered by the word "idiot".

THEN YOU USE A DIFFERENT WORD

JAPANESE IS A VERY CONTEXT-DEPENDENT LANGUAGE

WHAT YOU TRANSLATE A WORD AS DEPENDS ON THE CONTEXT

THIS IS VERY BASIC STUFF, HOW RETARDED DO YOU HAVE TO BE

>> No.7509376

>>7509360
Obviously not, because then there's no translation. But a translation's goal should be, first and foremost, to allow a reader who speaks a different language to get as close to the original language as possible. There is absolutely no reason to change things that are going to be understood by the average reader, and it is completely harmful to do so. It's much better to allow the reader to develop a sense of the context these Japanese words are typically used in, so they can get that same experience previously mentioned, not a re-imagined experience the translator thought up. Yes, some changes will be necessary to make it understood, but it should always be as little as possible.

So preserving the original language should be considered above providing a superior reading experience and capturing the original experience in a different language? Because preserving the original language does nothing but hinder those goals. WHen I'm reading something in English, I want to read it in English, not awkwardly overliteral psuedo-Japanese masquerading as English.

>> No.7509397

No, the job of a translation is to be transparent; it shouldn't be obvious that there was a translation to begin with.

Keeping any word in its original language would mean that the translation has failed.

Honorifics are a grey area; I'd claim that they're considered a part of names and thus immune to translation.

By this logic we should also not translate:

Seriously, I believe using "baka" all the time is just the script's fault rather than the language's. You could say it's the medium's fault, since there's a LOT of dialogue involved which leads into repetition of some words. Although I suspect it has more to do with the genre/setting of the eroge rather than the medium itself.

Here's some words that c ould've been used in that >>7508991

白痴
間抜け
