This is true for most things, much less true for forms of entertainment however.
I'll use that which I know best as an example, games.
I prefer Devil May Cry to Onimusha because the enemies and the player character are more complicated, and because of that, more interesting.
And I'm interested in higher levels of complexity because of how complex my mind is. It's simply an instinct kind of thing, the more complex I become (by playing more games than I could ever possibly remember) the more complexity I demand from the activities I occupy myself with(games), I can't really stop it.

Both Sanae slut meme and PAD長. Most memes can have their amusing moments if handled correctly (rare, but it happens), but these have been run into the ground, forced to shuffle off this mortal coil and conscripted into the choir invisible.
These two in particular bug me because I think a lot more can be done with these two characters, and at least in Sanae's case, fandom memes prevent that from happening. Excluding shipping, fans have been able to make Sakuya into a more complex character than EoSD, PCB, IN, and PoFV have allowed. Doujin have touched on how she might have been as a vampire hunter and what may have caused her to begin serving one instead. Whether or not she is to be turned to a vampire and how she handles that has been done in both light-hearted and dark, depressing tones. It is impressive sometimes to see how fans can let these things play out. Shame none of it can be discussed without "LOL SLUT" or "take a look at those pa--*knifed*"
