There's been a bunch I... enjoyed, I guess, but only one that stood above them enough to call it my favorite.
And if I were to try and be objective, I would be hard pressed to list more than 2-3 VNs that in my opinion deserve being called "good".
I guess I should just try harder on learning Japanese, but I'm not expecting a vast number of untranslated masterpieces out there.
I don't think I can even say I like VNs in general anymore.

How do I put it...take the point about Taichi being a monster. The writing was making him out to be some kind of terrible insane man when it was honestly a bit mild (even though he did in fact have mental problems). All his speeches didn't amount to much either, despite the fact that they weren't written badly and that it was a good idea in general. In other words, lacking substance, but appearing to have on the surface.

I did, it was obvious the entire thing was a cliche. I don't think the writer really has anything of worth to say. The only thing that seemed genuine in the game (not just Tower of Friends) is his idea about people interacting being beautiful.

Lots, f/sn, saya for example. Mind you, i'm not saying it was a bad piece of writing. For most of the part (the middle part) it was well done. It's just that it really wasn't more than a "good piece of writing". It lacked something.

>>7485148
I think a discussion should be about sharing ideas rather than persuasion, so I'm just glad you kept things polite. And this thread isn't a good one anyways so I can't really consider this a "derailment".

Saya was entertaining but shallow.
FSN had a severe problem in the focus of its thematic and developed it really haphazardly at times, especially in Fate and HF.

>>7485172
>FSN had a severe problem in the focus of its thematic and developed it really haphazardly at times, especially in Fate and HF.

Er, UBW is easily the most shallow part of the entire game, themewise... I'm thinking you're one of those people who just jack off to Archer and miss the point of the game entirely?

>> No.7485213

>>7485172
I found Saya to be one of the least shallow VNs. Well, Kouji's part was a waste of time, I suppose. Otherwise Saya had substance, it had a purpose and it was compelling. Being well-written also helps.

I agree with f/sn being clumsy. Nasu does seem to have that problem. Seems to have a hard time clearly saying what it is he tries to say, but I think it was only a real problem in the Fate route. Not sure if I agree that HF was haphazard, it seemed to follow logically after UBW. As far as themes go though it was certainly well developed.

I think the only thing that C+C had that f/sn lacked was compactness. Everything flows well after the boring start in C+C. Not a lot of wasted words in the parts that actually mattered. Otherwise I think the writer was writing about things he didn't know much about.

>> No.7485225

>>7485199
>Er, UBW is easily the most shallow part of the entire game, themewise... I'm thinking you're one of those people who just jack off to Archer and miss the point of the game entirely?

Not really. And I do get the game.
But the second part after the horrible Caster arc and if you don't count the out of nowhere shit happening by the end is more focused than the rest of the game.
The Shirou vs Archer fight basically summarize the entire thematic and you could say this is where you really see the essence of Shirou, who is the quintessence of FSN.

HF had the potential to be far more interesting but it didn't realize it, that's where the "haphazardly" come from.
It just felt really clumsy, like Nasu had something awesome in his head but didn't manage to convey it properly. A lot of things felt unnatural and the whole route felt unfocused, like you were watching everything through a clouded lens.

Sure, but then you get things like Kiri's mini-route.

No, I'm talking about the things Taichi said/did. As I said earlier, I think the only genuine thing in the game is the idea of people interacting being beautiful (which really was given about 2 minutes of real screentime, that being the few lines Taichi thought when he saw Kiri/Miki in the pool). The rest, all the insanity and the killing and period-licking seem to me to be put there based on cliched ideas.

Of course, the quantum physics was terrible too, but I can ignore things like that.

It's fairly common (if admittedly not completely accurate, but artistic license) knowledge that yes, there are people out there as crazy as Taichi, and yes, while not murdering people they generally come off as pretty normal no matter how fucked up they are inside.
