Anyway, what is a grimdark gensokyo like? Do humans fight back against youkai? why no one brings weapons from the real world to drive them off? And where is byaku in all of that- why was she allowed to be freed?

I don't particularly care for the outright grimdark version of the setting, I like more of a mix. Primarily having youkai that actually act different from humans, and that there's some acknowledgment that youkai do in fact eat humans.

But, please continue to enjoy the thread, unfortunately I do not have any pictures to contribute.

Add to that.

Although Lily is my favorite character, the Scarlet bunch follows just after. I like them portrayed in a sort of Halloween-horror kind of way. Like the mistress plays up the dark atmosphere and has fun instilling fear in lesser beings but is really not interested in harming others so much as entertaining herself and indulging in tea parties and whatnot.

I envy the fairy maids of the manor...

I feel that way. Actually I find these sorts of pictures humorous more than anything. Seeing youkai who are supposed to be feeding on humans in lore, being cute and harmless (in fanon at least), but acting like they are their mythological counterparts.

If anything the level of horror I get from these is similar to the way I felt the first time I saw the video of the Big Dog robot...
