Zelda definitely is. Ys 1/2 were great but just don't have the gameplay to match up, and almost all the later Ys's weren't that great, whereas Zelda has good games here and there.

Can't go wrong with any of the newer ones - Ark of Napishtim, Oath in Felghana or Origin. Ys Seven for PSP is the easiest to get into, but it's nothing like the others.

The older games haven't aged too well.

RPGs are worthless if they do not have good stories or characters. The story in every Ys game I have played has been generic shit.

The only ARPG as good as Ys is Terranigma.
Zelda is fun, but outside of Link's Awakening and maybe Majora's Mask, it's far from being that good.

wow other people who played Landstalker. /jp/ has surprising good taste at times.

That said, I love the older Zelda games. Something just started changing with the N64 era and by the gamecube era I just stopped playing them.

That said, I still love Ys, however the early Zelda games are right there with them.

>> No.7455982

>>7455894
I play story-based games for the story, yes. And Deadly Premonition is an awful game, but it has a highly entertaining story.

RPGs are story-based games. If you strip out the story, you get nothing but a repetitive grindfest that takes little to no skill. Why would anyone play them?

>> No.7456084

>>7455982
I dunno, I just see Ys/Zelda as an action/exploration game. Fast combat and hard bosses in Ys, while Zelda's combat is lighter but has the dungeon exploration to it. And for that matter, I find the original Zelda to be the best in the sense that you can actually roam around and skip dungeons, blow up secret walls, and the enemies deal solid damage while you have the option of finding cool shit to trick yourself out. They let up on this in the later games, and it's disappointing.

As for them bring RPGs, I don't really find any videogame to be a real role-playing game where you actually control a heavy influence to the story in which you have real options throughout the game (last minute decisions/3 endings doesn't really cut it. Not even Deus Ex).

So pretty much JRPGs I view as strategy games, same for SRPGs. These action RPGs pretty much boil down to action games, no amount of interesting story or stats change it for me.

>> No.7456119

>>7456084
But in a game like Ys, if the story and characters have zero appeal, why not just play Ninja Gaiden or Devil May Cry or any other pure action game for infinitely deeper combat?

I feel the same way about traditional RPGs (like Final Fantasy and such). They're extremely simplistic compared to pure strategy games, but the story, characters, music, high production values, and all of that stuff keep them interesting. If that stuff isn't appealing, then I just don't see the point in playing them.

Yeah, I know what you mean about moving on to a more complex game like the ones you mentioned or say God Hand.

I guess what it boils down to is that while the more complex game mechanics lead to a good, rewarding experience in a better game, it's also worth mentioning or playing the simpler, yet also well-designed game.

R-type and Gradius are pretty straightforward compared to the newer shmups' scoring systems, mechanics, bullet patterns, and speed. But what makes the two noteworthy is that while mechanically simpler, the games take into account your options while balancing the game around the more limiting options. Certain Gradius bosses are designed to be frustrating considering you can only fire straight forward which forces you to wait out a pattern until the core is vulnerable, or position an option carefully to get around this limitation.

The deeper game has the challenge of taking into account the more diverse array of options/outcomes while balancing the game around them. I think both types of games are incredibly fun and interesting as long as executed correctly.

And yeah, the typical RPG hasn't undergone a much a single transformation in ages in substance. Most of the big names are just flaring polish with no substance behind them, like empty aesthetics which in the end feel bad since it's mismatched to the poor strategy of the game.
