My dad's in the navy and he's been to Japan several times due to his deployments. His pay is also ridiculous because he works with the nuclear engine of a submarine. One of his re-enlistment bonuses was $60,000. I think his last one was somewhere around $20,000.

If you're at all good at math/science, try going for the Navy's nuclear program. That bonus pay is nice.

Of course, the Air Force is probably better if you don't want to be stuck out in the ocean forever. I'm thinking of joining the AF myself.

If you join Navy, you will spend your deployment on a ship sleeping in a tiny little bunk and have no privacy, but you get to go all kinds of sweet places. You will probably get to go to Japan because you get to sail all over the place. You also will not just do your main job, but will also be trained how to pretty much do many of the other jobs on the boat.

If you join the Air Firce, you will eat catered food, and sleep in dorms. You will likely have your own room but will share a bathroom with someone else. The Air Force rooms are much like college dorms. Your deployment could be anywhere really, but there are 3 bases near Japan and a few in Colorado and Colorado is really nice.

I would join Chair Force since its the most military-unlike service.

Navy uniforms are sweet as hell though.

I've been wanting to get the balls up to join the Air Force just so I can finally go places and have a job and get fed and clothed and have them take care of me, instead of living in my room, but I don't know if I will be able to handle the lack of privacy and dorm checks.

In the Air Force, only those who have 4 year degrees and go in as an officer can fly planes. I think enlisdted guys can be loadmasters and flight engineers and serve on cargo planes though. I don't even think you have to parachute during basic if u want to join the AF, nor know how to swim unless you do air crew.

In the Navy, I have no idea, but I know you have to be able to swim, which makes sense.

In the Air Force myself, shit sucks, but it's not necessarily difficult. There are physical requirement of course, though. When I went through boot camp, I believe it was 45 pushups, and 50 situps at one minute each, and run a mile and a half in under 12 minutes? Perhaps it was 12:30. However, I'm pretty sure they cut it down to normal Air Force standards now, you only need 33 pushups, 43 situps, and 1.5 mile in under 13:33.

Also, know that you don't really get to choose your base. you have what they call a "dream sheet" of the top 8 American, and 8 overseas bases you want. I've lived in California almost all my life, and I've liked it, so I filled up my sheet with the five California bases, and three other west coast bases. And they threw my ass in Idaho.

But once you complete you job training, you can volunteer for things like a two year postal service job in lieu of your "real" job, and they're all in places like Germany, Italy, Korea, and of course Japan. Waiting on my transfer to Yokoto in a month and a half because of that, actually.

Uniforms: Marines > Navy > Army > AirForce
Chill-as-fuck factor: Air Force > Navy > Army > Marines
Base locations: Navy > Marines > Army > Air Force

If Marine recruiters say you can be stationed in Japan, what they actually mean is Okinawa. Okinawa does not equal Japan. Okinawa, specifically Naha, is a tiny mosquito-bitten island that you can see in one day if you have a car. If you're thinking about getting with Okinawan girls, you are either: A) wanting to experience all those STDs for yourself, or B) you have a healing factor like Wolverine or something, and you're immune to disease. Double wrap that shit if you take the plunge in Okinawa.

Air Force and Navy both have substantial bases on mainland Japan. Yet another reason to join the chill services, as opposed to Hooah Army or OORAH Marines.

I never said anything about that.

After he makes it through the academy, he's got it made.

Once he finishes short bit of training he suddenly outranks every enlisted man in the military.

And the military academies are top tier schools. Which pay you to go to them.

If he wants to go to grad school or med school or something after finishing the academy, the military will pay for his tuition.

Then once he's gotten his fantastic, free education he's bound to the military for a few years. But when he's able to quit he's got some fantastic career choices open to him.

Seriously, you carry on about hatred of normals, then respect such stupid shit as the military. Hired killers for the people who establish and keep the wheels and cogs of normalfaggotry well lubed.

Its also worth noting the pro-military posters in the thread post like morons. I hope this is some type of /jp/ irony and not people who will actually reply to a post with "lol". And people who say there are a shocking amount of "NEETs" in a paid position.. ?

Joining any type of defense force is one of the most retarded things a person can do. If you join the Air Force, you probably will be deployed at least once on a four year contract.

But as long as you are a non combat job, it's just a pain in the ass, you have more risk of being killed walking around a ghetto in America at night. I believe it was reported five military personnel were killed by a rocket in Iraq today, that number is the largest they've seen at once in like two goddamn years. We're in war, and five people dying at once is a shock, that's the current battle climate.

But it does suck ass, because you spend 6 months in the shitty desert. You make fucking bank off the extra combat and danger pay, at least. Used all that extra cash on some figurines I missed out on, so I guess it was worth it.

I'll take this further too.

I am an ignorant idealist, I will admit this from the start. But I am a pacifist, and I am sickened by the military and the fact they believe they are doing some type of good when they are actually killing other people.

The countries you are invading have the same view of you as the you have of the terrorists who commited 9/11. You've not only invaded, but bombarded their countries from the air and left many people dead. It is no wonder they don't like you, Americans. It is no wonder the rest of the world is disgusted when your "leaders" claim it is a holy war and defend these atrocities in the name of something as childish as religion.

One of my good friends is in the army and I say these things to him all the time. The sad thing is he agrees and is conflicted because he doesn't want to hurt anyone. But of course, he has no other option, coward politicians declare war and people like him have to go and fight and potentially die because, as some of you have pointed out, some people have no other choice. And yet you still say this like it is something beyond criticism or even good! The fact that there exists a service where if you can't find a job you have the opportunity to be a hand of government and potentially die is a good thing!

Fucking hell.

>I understand that, but what else am I supposed to do on a place like 4chan?

For all of your convictions and ideals, you're complicit in the system you're condemning. Obviously there's a great difference between the culpability of a soldier shooting an enemy and a man paying sales tax on a candy bar, but wars aren't paid for by the politicians. The active participants in the military are a small, small percentage of a nation's manpower. The military is only able to go and kill people in other nations because of the passive support from those paying for it without complaint.

You're not doing anything to change or dismantle the system, and are likely supporting it through taxes. You seem very, very angry. Why not use that anger for something constructive and join an international aid organization or become involved in local politics? Most people aren't responding not because your cutting argument left them completely stumped, but because your posts are filled with the sort of bluster and indignation you would expect of someone on youtube. If you care so deeply about an issue, do something about it instead of complaining on Japan General.

This is /jp/. Take it easy.

I am involved in local movements and support the political parties I do support. I know how to take it easy, believe me, I just don't think this bullshit belongs on here so I'm not worried about my tone or the way I post, or the responses I don't get, to be honest.

The fact of the matter is, the government recruits people of without work, in order to fight and die for them. Throughout that ordeal, people of other nations may also die. I am very disturbed by this and it makes me sad. Finding glory in war is one of the most foolish things I could imagine.

Nobody is glorifying war in this thread. You're really barking up the wrong tree here; the people in this thread only see the military as a good source of income. They don't care if they're being 'exploited' to fuel an unethical war. All they care about is their figure collection and the next season of anime.

They've built up an image of being mouthbreathing jarhead bullet sponges among anyone I know. The one Marine I know doesn't regret his time but has called the one person we were mutually acquainted with that was going to enlist a retard and has talked about the corps being full of idiots with rank. Special ops is where I imagine gungho OORAH kids would aim for and MARSOC is extremely unpublicized vs the Rangers, Green Berets or SEALs. If someone was considering the list, the "other" job would be Pararescue because in the public eye MARSOC really isn't set apart for any reason. Force Recon is the same if not worse. I just don't get how people get excited about the Marines unless they are the kind of people that buy into advertising hard, or just want to be infantry and don't think they could make it through special ops training.

If I recall Captain is o-6.

So to become a navy ship captain you need to join as an Officer with a 4 year degree, and then serve 15 years. I am not that familiar with navy ranks/customs but I assume someone in command of a smaller boat would be referred to as captain even if they are not that rank?

I.E. An actual Captain in charge of a destroyer vs a Lieutenant in charge of a patrol boat or something still being called captain?
