Hi /jp/, Journeyman Japanophile here again with another question for those knowledgable about the on-the-ground conditions in Japan.

Specifically: Do Koreans or Chinese in Japan usually speak Japanese? In one particular English publication about Japanese slang, a joke was made where if one was "Black or Chinese" they may as well "run from the police."

In the U.S. at least, there are individuals who "pass" or pretend to be of a certain racial or ethnic background while in reality knowing that they are not. With regards to this question, this is not referring to 通称名, but the complete and actual impersonation, 偽者っと言うかも.

Although the number of non-Japanese residents of Japan are low, is it common to meet Korean or Chinese residents in day-to-day life? For example in school? Have you ever believed someone was Japanese but then later discovered they had been lying?

Considering most Zainichi Koreans (在日韓国人) have lived in Japan all their lives, they would speak Japanese. As for Chinese, it all depends. Some are taken there as cheap labor (much like the labor situation with Mexicans and the US) and those are more likely to not know the language. There are many Chinese who do live in Japan and know the language however. I know one guy who dated a girl for a long time and didn't know she was Korean until 2 years after they started the relationship. As for how common you see them, it all depends on where you live. The more rural, the less chance you will see them except for maybe the cheap Chinese labor. I hope that answers it somewhat.

Again, it all depends on the person. But, most blend in and contribute to normal everyday society. If someone knows you are Korean, then you might encounter some racism. Koreans and Chinese are who the racists in Japan dislike the most. But you might also find someone who doesn't give a crap about racism. It all depends.

They are called Filipino and they pretend to be Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, except when they lack any "Asian" features and are thought of as Hispanic. Only then do they call themselves Filipino.
