Since I soon won't have much better things to do with my life anyway, I've been thinking of trying to make a serious Pixiv account rather than one I just use to gain access to the site.

Atm I don't even have bookmarks or any favorites. Personally I'm against the idea of bookmarking because well... it just feels weird. I have other ways of keeping tabs of the artists I like anyway, and I prefer just surfing around clicking whatever I come across that looks good.

Not to mention there are few artists that I like so much that I could honestly admit to loving or liking everything they've done.

Anyway, what I want ask is, what sort of mentality to you guys think I should have when starting? I'm decent at drawing and I practice to get better almost everyday, but I am scared shitless of these kind of communities once I am expected to contribute.

This is a good mentality, thank you. And I guess, at the moment I know there are people possibly even worse than me on Pixiv already, and I enjoy seeing how people don't limit themselves to their skills, so I guess I can try to stay humble, but positive and open minded.

I want to be a part of the community and contribute just like many others before me, but I have to take it one step at the time.

Just think of it as a classroom. Sometimes you get bad feedback but you shouldn't stop coming. Also it's the internet, people come and go, they won't bookmark you just to tell you're shit everyday.
But if you're shy and can pull off something like sk-ii's reports then I'd love to advise you not to change.

Way too many to list... I guess some of absolute favorites are:

http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=27452 (banpai_akira) - Does the art for the Koumajou Densetsu games. Doesn't update often and images are usually fairly low res, but it's still really great stuff.

http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=997454 (miyuki_ruria) - Amazing art and one of two artists to have a Touhou picture with over 10k bookmarks (it's the Mountain of Faith characters one).

http://www.pixiv.net/member.php?id=37062 (hagiwara_rin) - Best Reimu artist out there.

http://www.pixiv.net/member_illust.php?id=3104565 (ke-ta) - And this artist kinda came out of nowhere like a month ago and has more lewd stuff, but he's quickly becoming one of my all-time favorites.

Thanks for the support. I'll do my best, because it would be really nice to feel like I am finally getting somewhere after years of doodling all by myself.

My style is a bit "different" I guess, but it's kind of art I also enjoy when others draw, so I never expected myself to attract a lot of attention anyway since I know I might not appeal to everyone.

I really enjoy his reports and they are among the things that inspire me to try and get more serious. I've been thinking of maybe picking up storytelling, but if I do it probably won't be manga-style. Maybe something more along the lines of a picture book or an illustrated short story since I enjoy writing as well.

However, my japanese is only good enough for very simple stories so I'd have to rely on using english. And english-speaker fans tend to attract a lot of negative attention. Like littleshrimp, I can't help but respecting him even if only because he seems so laid back and confident even when some people hate him, or at least, his works. I don't think I'd have the mental stamina to take on that kind of situation.
