7404526 No.7404526 [Reply] [Original]

My parents have been threatening to kick me out if I don't get a job, so today I called a place that was hiring but it was an answering machine. I left an awkward message telling them to call me back when they were "ready." Then 10 minutes later I realized I didn't leave my number so I had to call and leave another awkward message with my number.

I hate the real world.

Let's have an armpit thread to cheer me up.

have fun.

have fun turning in applications that are tossed on a pile and never looked at. Have fun with all the stores where applications are "online" and you enter your info into the online system which is just a fucking black hole. Have fun finally getting a minimum-wage job you bust your fucking ass at, and are proud of the good job you do, until you get fired for a bullshit reason so they don't have to give you the mandatory 6-month raise they promised you. Hey, there's plenty of desperate 20-somethings out there, especially in this economy! Woohoo.

At least, after you've gone through all this, and your parents bitch at you, you can tell them all the nice details of job-hunting and point out how utterly fucked you are.

I work for a major big-box grocery chain, and at my current location we have over 1,000 active online applications (those submitted in the past 3 months.) Our town size? ~28,000.

Good luck getting anything without knowing somebody. You'll need it. And as a side note, it's not about what papers you've earned, it's about who you know. Fun discovery after six years of university in a hard science. Between interns and people who can't afford to retire (yet willing to work for near starting salaries) it's a bitch finding work.

In my experience, living in Houston TX at least, there are tons of jobs in my field. The only problem, is getting the experience they require. Everyone in the Engineering business wants people with a minimum of 3 years, and sometimes as much as 15. The only way around that after graduation is to work for fucking free or have very good connections. The only reason I even managed to get a (shitty) job is through one of my few friends after wasting 6 months applying for what few entry level positions were available in my field. What's sad is, I've taken only 1 course that was applicable for the job position, besides knowing AutoCAD which is required. I feel sorry for the much more qualified people that have no connections with employers or their co-workers who are earnestly looking for a job but just can't even get people to look at their resumes.

Anyways, sorry for that. Not my blog. Reporting myself. Getting out of /jp/. Posting Reimu.

Software is kind of similar with respect to weird experience expectations.

After graduating college, I spent the better part of a year sending my resume to EVERYWHERE. I ended up finding a job on (no joke) craigslist for a random area of the US where I had never been.

So, after a few years I quit my job, refresh my resume, send it out. I end up getting re-hired by my old employer with better job terms (fuck yea).

Fast forward two few years. I am turning down offers from back when I sent out my updated resume. Apparantly there is such thing as unemployment if you're a programmer with experience.

I had an interview for one position at Ikea and didn't hear back. Finding a job really is a bitch, and the only thing that I can even remotely find is probably something at a grocery store. My sleep schedule is already pretty messed up, so I could deal with not sleeping for days on end if it meant finding work.

Oh, and it's gotten even worse for some folk, especially friends of mine since they had to give up their jobs. If you've ever heard of Safeway (they go by different names all around the country, here they own Genuardi's), they now deem that continuing a college education is a "conflict of interest" and will fire you if you don't work for 2 weeks in order to pursue one. I'm still not sure if that's entirely legal, but them's the breaks.

Are you American? Nobody refers to college as uni here, so I'm going to say "no." The American job market is shit, and it's hard to find work even if you are qualified.

I'm an Eagle Scout of the BSA, which is SUPPOSED to mean something, mainly that I'm highly adaptable and a natural leader/dedicated worker. It doesn't mean anything anymore.

I still live with my parents and am not that happy that I found a job and make tons of money now, even if it was what I was studying for. I wish I could just go back to the old days. Don't let society fool you... Working fucking sucks and dream jobs do not exist. I was even looking forward to starting work.

Live with your relatives for as long as you possibly can, and avoid work at all costs. Or live alone and get by on food stamps and/or disability checks. I know I would rather be doing that.

I'd rather be working a shit job somewhere. I get stir crazy if I don't leave my place of residence for days on end. I either get bored with everything and start hearing voices, or (now that I can actually buy it) drink. Usually one shot of good vodka stops the voices.

There's a lot of web development jobs on craigslist actually, but I'm in C++ billing software.

I dunno, if I was looking for candidates, I'd post on craigslist.

My dad is always talking about getting me into stocks, he just made 16 grand last week and i think thats cool, but im not good at math and i would most likely fail hard at it. He keeps on telling me all his money will go to me and stuff but it makes me feel bad because i dont deserve shit, even if its a little money.

Yes, I'm American. It's just easier to type Uni than it is College. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I dunno, I like my job. I hang out with a few friends, play VNs, fix computers, cook, try and make the perfect Expresso, etc.

I could sit there all day and think about not having anything to do and then complain when something happens and I actually have to work... but what's the point?

>> No.7406130

Don't worry about it at least you left the number the second time. You just made a mistake, if you didn't correct the mistake it would have just come off much worse.

Businesses are only run by people after all and none of them are perfect.

You could be imprisoned by some random guy and tortured cruelly with no hope of ever escaping and not complain whenever the torture begins, I mean what's the point?

I don't think it's work as much as the fixity of adhering to the banal "workplace existence", but I really do think it means a lot to me to know that I can always just quit and live off disability checks.

I'm a grad student though and it is pretty sweet though.

armpits AND job-hunting woes?

this is MY kind of thread

6 months out of uni here, a fucking top uni too, couldn't find SHIT until job fair and then networking with old graduate student

waiting on a large beverage company for a manager position, and a small but successful startup for fucking anything since they were formed out of the lab I used to work in

What was your major and did you have undergrad research/internships etc?

I'm debating whether or not I should even attempt to find a job, despite soon graduating from a great uni with a sexy molecular biology degree, or just shoot for grad school now.

I guess if it helps I'm in the Bay Area aka one of the biotech capitals of the world, but it still feels like every fucking where I'm checking wants like 2-4+ years experience. Sometimes it's as bad as 2+ years experience for a fucking unpaid internship. Many people have brought up this kind of shit many times, but still, what the fucking fuck.
