I had a Griffon Youmu and Remilia ordered through AmiAmi until Yukari came out. Read the reviews, and canceled my Griffonshit with a quickness. I cited my reasoning and AmiAmi didn't even bother giving me any shit about it - just two cancellation notices.

They're conceptually very cool figures but it's not worth my money at this point with their QC issues.

Personally, I've bought a lot of figurines I've never seen the show for. I go for what I find appealing in the figures themselves. I often end up learning more about the characters after I've purchased them.

Only ones I've bought where I personally liked the character and the figure were Mai-Hime's Mai, Black Rock Shooter, and a small bust of Lavie Head.

You would be surprised how cheap making a gk can be. Sure the volks kits (and similar) are expensive but if you buy from the places outside of japan like e2046.com they are generally reasonably priced with and have cheap shipping, and there are plenty of sales as well.

I have 5 kits from e2046 and have not been disappointed with the quality of the casting.

My first kit Aozaki Aoko (pic related) http://www.e2046.com/product/8270 was about $28CAD and then about 5-6 colors of paint at $2-4 a piece. Then it was just a couple brushes (2-3$ each), some primer, glue and sandpaper and basic tools you probably already have around the house.

It takes very little paint so after you buy your initial paints each consecutive figure gets cheaper and cheaper to make. And while your initial attempts at painting might not be the greatest, it is pretty easy to strip the paint and try again. There is almost always a way to fix mistakes.

My first gk certainly cost less then the 70-120$ you would pay after shipping for a completed figure. E2046 also recasts some WF kits as well, which would be otherwise impossible or very cost prohibitive for me to obtain. An airbrush is the easiest way to do an extremely thin, flawless (depending on your skill level) coat of paint. You have to be pretty damn good to paint a GK with a paintbrush and not have any brush marks or obvious painting errors. Also shading is easiest with an airbrush.

Im still working on my airbrushing skills, also, recently ordered an Okuu GK from e2046, hopefully it will turn out nice, cant wait for delicious 1/6 scale okuu, I do think the suclpt could be a bit more..... okuuy (okuuish?) but hey, beggars cant be choosers (im only begging for more okuu figures)

Airbrushes do make it easier to get a good even coat with a nice texture, but there is some extra work they create as well. Some paints don't play nice with airbrushes and you need to properly thin any paint going into an airbrush. Then there is the extra cleaning and maintenance during painting and in between every color change to prevent paint clogging and stringing up.

I did not get an airbrush until after I did the Aoko gk entirely with a brush, you might want to wait to see if you enjoy painting and assembling a gk first. Plus there will always be parts of a figure you will need to use a brush on so getting some practice while keeping things simple might be a nice way to start. If you are dead set on "perfection" for your very first kit you might want to get an airbrush then. Or buy some other cheap kit to experiment with. Using brush only my first time left me with a bit of a shiny plastic-ish look which is much easier to avoid with an airbrush, but for a first try it's not that big of a deal. I was also unfamiliar with how to make my paint jobs more matte rather then glossy.

If you are set on getting an airbrush/compressor I bought the TC-196 from tcpglobal.com. It's the best combination of cheap/features you will want. A void tankless air compressors as many seem to suffer from inconsistent air stream which can screw up your painting. I use an Iwata HP-CS airbrush.

If you do get an airbrush, make sure you have the proper setup for it as well. If you don't have a ventilation system that removes the vapors and shit, the fumes will open a portal to Gensokyo. So it's best to use it outside.

That actually looks pretty good. All that it needs is some kind of matte coating, since shiny skin/hair gives off the cheap plastic-y look. Matte spray can also help hide surface imperfections such as brush strokes etc.

There's tricks/techniques to get that professional matte look that you could find; btw before you try it, know that just drenching it fully with a thick coat won't actually dry out totally matte (it'll probably dry somewhere between true matte and full gloss + also could interfere with paint if you're spraying too close). Shorter bursts from very far away, just close enough for the tiniest little droplets to get on it, done for a long time until you have a full even coat, has given me the best results. It takes a while to do but is absolutely worth it.

It may take like 15-30 passes to fully cover it. If you examine carefully you should be able to see the extent of your coverage as you progress. You don't want to spray so much that it forms a visible slick patch, since not only will that not dry totally matte but can also gob up and form big oozing drops that you really, really, really will not like.

Lastly for reference cover up any clear parts or surfaces you want to remain glossy before you spray. Just as an fyi clear parts will fog up with matte, possibly irreversibly.

Yeah, SAL can be completely retarded sometimes, they will just use whatever route happens to eventually get your package to the destination, which may result in the package moving all over the place before actually landing where it should be, since after all they carry no priority.

I've had SAL take anywhere from 7 days to >3 weeks, but usually the average for me is about 10 or 11 days. Closely watching some RSALs get to me elucidated why it takes so long.. I'm in California, and several times now I've seen my package fly right over my head and wind up in New York or Dallas etc for a few days, and then come back here again.. I have no idea why, that seems inefficient/wasteful of fuel as hell, but then again I'm not a shipping/air freight dude so I guess there's some rhyme or reason for it.

You reminded me that I have 10 year old paint in stashed away. I doubt it has any form of wetness left.

I never did get through painting my Aerith figure. I had most basics down, and it didn't look so bad, but then I had to pick panties color and that is where it all ended.

Another reason was that the manual showed that if you were skilled you could chop it up some and glue it together in a better pose. So I was split between if I should attempt it or go safe.

It was a lot like painting warhammer figures. Maybe because it was such a basic model.

Yeah, I was never into warhammer but I do actually use some warhammer paints (as you might've noticed in some of the pics above) for my gk's because they are available locally and are generally higher quality then what little else they have to offer in my city. Recently I've been using some artist acrylics but they don't play as nice with my airbrush.

What taxes are associated with EMS? I only buy stuff via EMS because I know a few people who have had SAL nightmares and the extra 15 bucks for shipping is definitely worth it when I'm spending ~100 dollars on a figure anyways.

When you use EMS to ship to a country which applies tax on imported goods, the tax is almost always applied. However, when using SAL it hardly ever gets taxed for import duty.
For example in the UK when you buy anything from outside of Europe, you get charged 20% tax on it (including the shipping fee). Also, the delivery companies they use tend to add a further 'handling charge' to it for giving your item to the customs which is ~£13. So basically you'll get charged 20% + £13 on top of having to have your item sit in customs for about a week.
So in the end you could pay all that money for EMS or have your item arrive a couple of days later using SAL.

Well the griffon kenshin is shit and you know kotobukiya figs are generally poor man Alter/GSC.
The best Kenshin figs at the moment are probably the one done by freeing and volks. Good luck getting them though.

Not being forced to consider shipping and customs is a big relief. Shipping is generally faster than SAL from Japan, and the price difference to other shops after all things considered isn't significant.
