Let's have a Touhou game thread. Discuss problem spots, victories, all sorts of things. I'm currently working on the Fairy Wars Extra, it seems easier than the other Extras for me so far.

>> No.7306528

Yukari's first spellcard: is it the same as Ran's in that you only have to move one for every two waves of bullets? The small ones always mess me up and I end up moving more than necessary. I saw in a replay that you can avoid them by moving vertically, is that necessary, or is it possible to do it just moving horizontally?

>> No.7306529

What do you guys think are the best trance spots in Ten Desires?

I have no face for when I tried to double-score the bomb parts at the end of stage 2 and it ended prematurely because Kyouko appeared.

I haven't unlocked SA extra so I don't know yet. So far I've only unlocked PCB, IN, MoF and FW Extras so far, so far I've been extremely impressed with the FW Extra rather than frustrated, I feel as if I'm actually improving. Perhaps it's because of the freeze mechanic though.

Once you figure out the hard parts it's easy to clear, yeah, you get like 12 lives total. That's a great fight though after the first spellcard it never lets up until the timeout. Most ex noncards are a total joke and break the tension.

For Ran anyway I guess that works, but it feels a bit like playing blindly. Same for both spells: move before the aimed bit is on you. Moving vertically isn't necessary (and it's really more like moving diagonally), but it certainly takes you across the screen more slowly so you can time the spell out without having to switch directions. Move right before the small ones hit you and the rest of it will have passed your position. That's all.

I only used Reimu C once or twice and really hated how her shot controlled. Reimu A doesn't really have that problem, plus comes with the bonus of being amazingly good. Marisa A is nice as well admittedly, but a shot type that you really need to get used to unfocused movement with to use to its full potential. It comes with a lot of bombs though, which is nice.

They're spread out too much for it to really matter. I think the most pink spirits that appear at once is.. 3? Doesn't seem worth trying for.

Anyway the system is busted because the best trance spots are during bosses. However he could conceivably fix that, so it's worth thinking about. The best trance spot with stage enemies I found is after Kogasa. You have to bomb through her as fast as humanly possible because the stage is on a fixed timetable. Then there's a huge fairy rush from opposite sides.

>> No.7306649

>>7306591
I guess it depends, I do it just for score, but trancing/bossgrazing also gives you more spirit point things for your next trance, so that might come in handy later in the stage when there are lots of point items/etc.
I still don't quite get how ZUN's gonna make use of this system in the later stages. it just seems to be an easy way to bypass spellcards and a cheap way to raise your points..

Where I'm at: Flandre and Suwako beaten easily. As much as I love Suwako, Flandre was the more fun fight. Cockblocked and burnt out on Mokou. Damn Fujiyama Volcano. No interest in PCB clearing; would be interested in UFO if it weren't for... well... the damn UFOs.

Where I wanna be:
I really want to face Koishi. I have 2 problems. The first is that without a gamepad, I'm stuck using my laptop keyboard. For the longest time, I thought there was a major problem with my keyboard where I could not move correctly while holding Z. If I tried to go diagonally or very quickly switch between up+down to left+right while shooting, I would just continue in one straight direction. Big problem. The second is that I can't pass SA normal. I know the spellcards, but I always manage to butterfinger my way into something enough times to not clear it in 1cc. I don't bomb enough either.
Hoping that TD has a fun/cute extra with good music, since I seem to be doing well on the demo. Speaking of which, the TD demo is the only Touhou game I have (including PC-98s on emulators) that doesn't exhibit the problem with movement I spoke of above.

I have always moved just horizontally. It's not quite like Ran's first, the main difference being that you have to open your eyes for it (no, seriously, I usually do Ran's first with my eyes closed and listen just for the audio cue). On a more serious note, I usually just stream it like what you would do for the yellow trailing dolls card in stage 4 of SA with Malice, going slowly until I reach the end then jumping quickly back. Not sure if you can just single tap ala Ran's first, but it's worth a try I suppose.

Also, can anyone spare me some tips for Koishi and Nue? Those are the only Extra's I can't clear, and with everyone saying Nue's the easiest I feel kind of hurt. Noncard: listen when she stops firing, then tap slightly to either side.

Naw, just do BlueRed Oni the exact same way you do Ran's version.

Start at the bottom on one side, stream to the other side. Then stream back.

Feels a bit weird.

I tend to just bomb the parts I get stuck at. Although dodging Fairy Overdrive is a good workout I'd say. I had to time it out once, that spellcard is really tough on certain routes. I don't know why, but I'm eager to use bombs in Fairy Wars but very stingy about using them in the other games.

>> No.7308139

>>7308124
You do have to dodge stuff, it is true. But the thing is it's a very different mindset when you have an invulnerability/screenclear at-will thing than when you don't. I can think of so many times in Samidare that I failed to dodge a pattern that I would've easily easily dodged in a game that didn't have the shield, simply because it's so difficult to go from looking for a good time to use your damage-invincibility shield to actual dodging. It's a lot more efficient to play games that don't offer you this mechanic if you're trying to learn how to dodge well.

StB and Double Spoiler might be pretty good to work on.

It's Marisa. Master Spark is never out of fucking nowhere.

It took me forever to get the hang of that fight. I understand the frustration with that stage, but it is one of my favorite battles in Touhou and for many reasons.
One of those that crosses my mind right now 'fore I go to bed is that what attracted me to Touhou was that it made more sense to me in a magic-user-vs-magic-user-fight context than anything else lately. As a kid, even though I liked most of the magic-themed stuff I encountered, it never made much sense to me that someone blessed with the ability to manipulate magic would fight by standing still saying nonsense for 10 seconds just to summon up Lesser Fireball Level 1. How can a determined-to-kill sorcerer set that up?
"Oh you've done it now. Time to fight to the death! Um, so.. uh... just hold still a moment..."
"...Okay."
"Great, thanks. Spirits of Fire and Air, grant me your powers! The time is neigh; my foe is--"
"Hey, look, is this going to take long? I've got, like, 5 other people I gotta kill..."
With two wizards dueling it made even less sense because they have the time to magically counter it--either with some kind of counterspell or Minor Frostshield Mark I. Fuck that. If I was some all-powerful mage, I wouldn't fight like that. Just one little fireball? Nah tons of magic bullets and arcane missiles all flying rapidly at my target giving them no chance of survival. My kinda thinking makes sense in Touhou. Marisa's just showing ya how it's done.

I'm actually amazed at my sudden progress lately.

I've been playing the actual games casually for about 1 1/2 years now, and was able to clear most Normals about 2 months after getting into it. After getting that good, I hit a wall.

In January, I could still sort of beat any Normal, but dammit, in SA, Rin always knew how to kick my ass 6 ways over. After some mere miracle, I was able to finally clear Normal, and after that, rapidly clear Ex in EoSD, PCB, IN, and almost MoF. Now my current goal is getting though something on Hard, and clearing Pha.

It's all most likely nothing special, but I feel it's a milestone for me.

Would it advisable to playing Lunatic mode now or try and clear it on Hard mode and then move on to lunatic? As far as I know Extra stages are generally harder than Hard mode so I assuming I won't have too much trouble if I play the games on Hard mode.

Also reading this thread was the first time I was aware that there were 'tricks' to clear SA (Managed to clear it with Reimu A + B and Marisa A + C). I had never heard of any of these, what exactly are they?

That aside:

I've 1cc'd EoSD on normal with Reimu A&B (with life handicap), Marisa A no life handicap with hitbox patch .

I can at least clear PCB with no life handicaps, but no 1cc yet.

The main thing with her spell cards is that you should try to get a bit close (before she stops time) so that when the daggers start closing in on you, they give you a bit more leeway (especially with the green random ones),and as for the non-spell card attacks, it all comes down to not trapping yourself, and trying to visualize your hotbox (you can approximate where it is from grazing) and trying to keep in a good spot while shit if flying from all sides.

Whoa. Do you usually play shmups other than Touhou? That was a very tightly done first stage. You did a few things that I wouldn't expect from people who play only or mostly Touhou on it, like hold off on killing a noncard until she shot out familiars for max points. And that strategy on Wriggle's Final Spell, it didn't work but oh man, good stuff. That and the very beginning of the third stage and most of the start of stage 4 is the kind of stuff I'd expect from, say, a Ketsui player, but not from a Touhou player trying to get a 1cc. Pretty impressive, honestly.

I think using solo-Marisa is pretty detrimental to your survival. Solo characters really make you want to stay unfocused as much as possible, and with how fast Marisa is that can make you take some risks where you shouldn't need to take risks for the sake of Time. Much easier to switch to the Youkai for bosses and still get a respectable number of points while moving at a rational speed. Plus you get to shoot and move through familiars which makes a lot of spellcards a lot easier.

But yeah, if you use Border team, with the hugely increased deathbomb window you'll stop dying with full bombs all the time, which goes a very very long way towards getting you the 1cc. You might even get it in one try if you play stages 1-3 like you did there.

Tried it again, holy shit EoSD frustrates me. Every time I play it I rage like crazy and just have to Master Spark everything in sight. I bombed Meiling about 6 times when I didn't even need to I was so frustrated. Why is this the only game that makes me feel this way?

How are you having more trouble with her second card than her first? I find them both tricky but the second is at least doable, I'm not even seriously trying the first any more. All I can really suggest for her second card is read ahead, predict how much the red orbs are going to shrink and where gaps will be. And don't get too angry when a white orb comes out from behind a red one and kills you.

Is there some trick to her third and fourth noncards or do I just need to play better? Every time she starts the second wave of small, fast orbs I need to bomb or I die.

1 card is just like Orin's wheel card, you just gotta misdirect and be patient since the red orbs shrink quite a bit
I try to anticipate as much as possible, but the flashing lights and all that shit always fuck me up.
3rd is easy since the hitbox for the orbs are tiny so you pretty much only need to move horizontally, although I like to move vertically anyway since I am paranoid.
4th is kinda tricky, but you just gotta stay right below Okuu and move only horizontally except when you really have to. I find it's also easier to dodge the small red ones that are only coming vertically, instead of diagonally, which means staying in the center.

hardest part for me has always been the non-spells where she flies all around the screen though.

Same for me, those are what I was asking about. As for her first card, it's the small white orbs that kill me. I'm just bad at moving quickly through that sort of obstacle, Fujiyama Volcano screws me over too.

I never need to bomb her first two noncards, or her third and fourth cards, and her last card can go either way.

It's just the first card, and the third and fourth noncard that give me problems, although I usually still have enough lives left as long as I didn't screw up border of wave and particle too badly.

The difficulty curve of SA hard seems really wonky. There's stuff in stage one and three that's harder than some of what Utsuho has, but Parsee is a complete joke even on lunatic.

I find her fourth card the hardest by far. It's too confusing. Third non spell in hard is just to stay under her a few taps up from the bottom of the screen. The first non-spell where she flies around is hardest for me, it's too dense, I bomb it by default.

For her second card, the blue bullets aren't really an issue so just pretend you're macrododging virtue of wind god and you'll do fine.

ah oops totally didn 't see that you wrote "non-card"

well 3rd one is easy, you just gotta be away from her a certain distance right below her, and get in that one gap to supergraze.

I'm pretty bad at these games. Trying to beat Mokou lately. I come pretty close, but still can't do it. I thought it would be a relatively easy extra because of spell practice.

Then I played against her non-spells and saw that the last 2 are basically the hardest non-spells I've seen in an extra stage. Why you do this to me ZUN.

Also been trying to clear Mystic Square, but I'm not sure if I'm actually having trouble clearing it or if it's because it's a game I've rarely played and am not used to yet.

Yeah, but that's what bombs are for. Especially in extra stages since you can't damage cards with them.

As for MS, it's probably a bit of both. It's not the hardest game ever, but it is very different from Windows games.

Give LLS a few tries, it's easier than MS with the same feel.

Also, given that this just hit bump limit I'll probably make another thread soon. Anybody mind if it's a general STG gameplay thread?

Go for it, /jp/ could use some non-touhou STG discussions.
