I'm thinking of suggesting Umineko to my sister. I dunno if she'll like it, but it'll be interesting to hear what she thinks of it either way.

Have you gotten any of your brothers/sisters/family/friends to read a VN or watch an anime or anything? What were their reactions like?

I recommended to my little sister True Remembrance, Umineko, Clannad and Little Busters.
She loved True Remembrance and played other VN translated in french like KS and Narcissu. (She has a limited knowledge of english.)
The other time I was reading the recommandation chart and my little sister pointed to Saya no Uta and said:"Oh, this one doesn't seem bad! It's going to be translated in french."

Well, i got my friend into anime a little, we started off watching Sailor Moon together, since one day i got an idea of rewatching it and she said she have never seen it. We somehow finished the first season (i couldn't force myself to watch anymore though). And since then we always watch something. One of the things i got her to see was Umineko, when it started airing. She loved it. Then she started to play the vn, but she hates the art and after one year and a half, she only managed to get to EP3, so i'm not sure if she is ever gonna finish it.
But she is playing Clannad, which is her favoutite thing ever.
At first she was more into it, but recently she found a new obsession (k-pop lol) and it seems she devotes her free time to that fully (except playing Clannad like i said).

Then i also have another friend. I don't think she is gonna play any VN in the nearest future, but we play a lot of vidya, mainly survival horrors together, though i'm not she if it counts because she was already into that before she met me (she used to watch her dad playing video games since she was little).
She can also watch anime as long as it makes her laugh, so sometimes we watch more crazier ones(like p&s).

tl;dr yes i have, to watch anime mostly. They liked it.

I gave Fate/Stay Night to my sister (conveniently forgot to mention it has porn), she loved it. She has since played:
999, Aoishiro, Chaos; Head, Crimsoness, Cross Channel, Higurashi EP1, Sekien no Inganock, Ever17, Narcissu, omgwtfotl, Planetarian, True Remembrance, Tsukihime, Umineko EP1-6, Utawarerumono.

She also reads those ridiculously long fantasy novels, so the large amount of reading wasn't a problem. If you're trying to 'convert' someone who doesn't already read it's probably best to start with more game-like or shorter VNs.

Ever17 - loved it
YMK - found the H-scenes too ridiculous to read after Aeka's first scene (she probably expected those scenes to be actually well-written and erotic...)
Umineko ep1 - tl;dr

My boyfriend has also played some (/jp/ hobbies are part of what brought us together), though most VNs have too much text for him, or he thinks: but the fact that Tsukihime and FSN's Fate are along the few he has read may be twisting his idea of how long VNs are... I'm thinking of making him play Sengoku Rance this summer, possibly the two of us playing it together on computers. That'd be so amazing - playing Sengoku Rance all night long with some ice tea and noodles and jerking each other off when we get horny. ;_;
