So pic unrelated. I'm tryng to get some VNs to work but I'm trying to do it for a buddy of mine that uses an old version of GNU/Ubuntu (9.x). We can't get the .bat to open because they aren't recognized so I made a copy of the file and made it into a .sh, the file type identical to a .bat. The problem is, I'm not very proficient with Ubuntu and he hasn't had to deal with any .sh so we are both stumped, I've looked around online but I'm not finding any real help. Any thoughts or has anyone else done this on Ubuntu?

TL;DR: how do I VN on Ubuntu?

Fuck off.

Get a real OS for your otaku-related shit.

Ubuntu is a completely different operating system than what every VN is made for. There is no "quick fix" for making them work. Get a real operating system.

I'll let him know, thanks guys.

Read OELVNs. Ren'py works fine with Linux.

Alternatively, just wipe shit all over your computer screen and get the same experience!

You really, really should just stick to windows if you don't want to learn how to use something else.
No matter how much anyone tells you how linux is just as easy to use, it's no use if you're plain stupid and immune to learning.

You can probably run them through WINE, but it's going to take some effort. Easier to just install Windows into a VM and play from that.

>> No.7293063

Like everyone said, get a real OS.

Where is the problem now? What for do you need the bat? I'm not an expert on wine and if the following doesn't help, I suggest you make a thread on /g/

Anyways, tell him to update to *buntu 11.04 or Mint 10 [or soon 11] if he cares about dat Gnome.

Recently I was testing wine on Xubuntu 11.04 with Da Capo2 and Kira Kira and both have worked fine. Once wine is installed, you can just 'double-click' the win32 executable in a file manager and the game will start. Just like in Windows.

In wine you can rune bat files with cmd, i.e. type 'wine cmd'. Then cd to the directory of the bat file and run it. Of course, make sure the partition is not mounted with the noexec option and that the bat file has the x flag set.

Generally you'd use Wine to open Windows programs in Linux. For VNs and other Japanese stuff, make sure that the system language is set to Japanese.
To see if a particular program runs in Wine, check appdb.winehq.com.
Picrelated is Saya no Uta running on my Ubuntu installation.

You never know if your Windows is part of a botnet and infected with MBR parasites.

Which is why you run mac.

OP you should've asked /g/ or something. Linux is mostly used by programmers and scientists and other such people who do actual work with their computers.
/jp/ uses only Windows because all /jp/sies do is play porn games and post on chans. Being allowed to read the code of the programs you use isn't useful to people who can't understand any of it.

Uhm, a Linux distribution would be perfectly fine for such activities. But then again, you could just as well take risk by pirating a certain corporate OS.
