Hi, I wasn't sure where to ask this. /v/ seems to hate VNs, and it seems like this board discusses them more than /a/ does (even though they made KS).

Anyway, I'm a bit of a noob to visual novels. Someone recommended me some before but none of them really caught my interest.

I once played a game called Snatcher back on the Genesis which was really cool, and was a lot like Phoenix Wright.

Are there any other games like this, where it's a visual novel, but also a detective story where you play as a hard boiled bad ass trying to solve a giant conspiracy? Does Japan still make games like that these days?

Umineko no Naku Koro Ni.
Seriously OP.
You will not regret.

Policenauts. Which reminds me that I should really get round to finishing it.

Cing made "Hotel Dusk" on the DS, a cop named Kyle investigating some mystery
"Again" is also concerning an FBI agent

Give this a try. Also Flower, Sun, and Rain, or Hotel Dusk.

I already played that actually.

I was wondering if there was anything new like this, maybe for the PC.

Closest to the noir feeling is Kikokugai, where you play a mafia hitman out to take revenge against his sister's rape and murder by his former associates. There is less mystery solving and more chasing down and killing everyone responsible, though. And one of the more sympathetic antagonists (not one of the rapists, just a dude who finds the "kill everyone standing between me and the rapista" approach of the protagonist a little bit extreme) wields crowbar swords.

Closest to the noir feeling is Kikokugai, where you play a Chinese hitman out to take revenge against his sister's rape and murder by his former associates. There is less mystery solving and more chasing down and killing everyone responsible, though. And one of the more sympathetic antagonists (not one of the rapists, just a dude who finds the "kill everyone standing between me and the rapista" approach of the protagonist a little bit extreme) wields crowbar swords. Even better in this regard is the untranslated Gekkou no Carnevale, featuring a werewolf taxi driver with mafia ties.

For a "placing together clues to get an overall picture" type of game, Ever17 is good. Play it without browsing /jp/ further because it's easy to get spoiled.

Also, don't mention /v/ and /a/ on /jp/ without expecting frothing rage. Both boards are not taken well here due to their unparalleled concentration of retards.

Japan produces a lot of stuff so you can find more if you dig enough, but most of it won't be ever translated, so yeah.

Also, just so you know, both /a/ and /v/ handle VN newbies for us so they recommend relatively mainstream titles. We dabble in less common stuff.

It's because you sounded reasonably not-retarded, and didn't ask for recommendations on things that could have been easily answered by a simple week of lurking, or 5 seconds on Google.
Were that all your kind would do the same.

This may be of interest too, since it is not about going to high-school, being a fucking nobody yet having a harem of delicious 2D girls. Might go well after Kikokugai.

I like this place. The other recommendations I've gotten sucked ass.

Thanks.

NO conspiracy, but Chain is about a detective. A bit too much sex to my liking.

Try Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni as well.

Otherwise, just listen everyone else.

not OP, but if I disliked the anime of Umineko, does that mean the VN will not be to my taste as well?

Play a real old-school detective/adventure game, like Blade Runner.

Why do I miss Westwood Studios so much?
