Well, they'd be right since the first game version was very buggy and laggy. Public server hosts seem to replaced the vanilla with some equally buggy and crappy mods with retarded gimmicks, whereas the competitive scene is using ET 2.60b and ET Pro 3.2.6 which makes the game smooth and balanced.

Some publics use the competition mod (which is the only playable mod I've seen, others are laggy or filled with annoying stuff or both), but that doesn't solve the #1 problem of public play: nobody has a reason to give a crap about the success of their team. It's alright if you just want to shoot at people, but I prefer playing ET as a team game. Pic related, this is your teammate on a public server

Being a rambo medic was always fucking awesome in ET. Grab some ammo and just go to town on the enemy team, reviving anyone who happens to be with you and tossing down kits while plowing through the enemy. Then you get instagibbed from random artillery spam/Panzer/Grenade launcher etc. Fun times..

I tried reinstalling enemy territory a few months ago, but punkbuster is being a huge bitch. Do you have to manually patch it 9999 times?

Following this http://iron.pp.fi/pelit/ET/index2.html got it to work perfectly in 10 minutes, including download times. Without any knowledge about what to do, installing ET as a new player is nearly impossible.

That pisses me off to no end.
I can understand if they use NQ, ETpub or whatever since it adds to the game but all the sound packs and skins are just obnoxious.
Though it's bearable if you find a couple of servers you like and just stick to them.
